What do we know about the plotline of Noah Baumbach's new Netflix film, Jay Kelly? We know a lot of the cast (and it is a good one), but what about the story? Not much. The film's tagline is that the titular character is well-known, but, sadly, he does not know himself well.
Still, who cares? We are going to watch either way, and we likely should. Baumbach has a long history of success with your favorite streamer, including the Oscar-nominated Marriage Story. Jay Kelly will be his fourth partnership with Netflix.
But again, that cast... The film stars George Clooney and Adam Sandler, so that alone makes the film worth watching. The movie is heartbreaking, but does that mean "dark comedy?" Maybe. With Sandler and Clooney involved, we can assume lots of well-earned laughs and poignant emotions.
George Clooney and Adam Sandler-led Noah Baumbach film Jay Kelly gets a release date
But here is what you want to know, right? When and where can you see the film? Jay Kelly will be released theatrically on November 14 (possibly dated to try to get in well before the cut-off for movies that could be nominated for the Oscars next year). Still, it will then arrive on Netflix on December 5.
In other words, the streaming giant doesn't care how the movie makes at the box office, as it will assume that new eyes will sign up for subscriptions to see the Clooney-Sandler film. That is how Netflix makes its money, and the Oscar talk is just icing on the proverbial cake.
Baumbach wrote the script along with Emily Mortimer and also acts as a producer. This gives Baumbach nearly complete control over the project, which is good. We know he can make good stuff. And now we know his latest Netflix-linked work will be available to stream in mid-November with a quick streaming follow-up.
