Netflix is adding 8 movies and series this week (March 22, 2025)

This week it's Chelsea Handler and Harlan Coben. Not together - but I'd watch that on loop.

Netflix is taking it easy on us this week, as they're only adding eight new shows this week. Maybe the old adage is right after all: March comes in like a lion and goes out like a made-for-streaming rom-com. I'm pretty sure that's it.

Reality shows, true crime stories, stand-up comedy - they're all standard fare for your favorite streaming service. Unless they're paying top dollar for someone like Dave Chapelle, all of these shows cost quite a bit less than, say, a $320 million critical disaster that viewers love. For what it's worth, I think the critics were primed to hate the movie before they saw the first minute.

So that's exactly what we're getting this week. There's also a new Harlan Coben adaptation, a light and semi-breezy rom-com, and a new show that Bridgerton fans will absolutely want to check out. Best of all - at least to me - is how many of these shows are originally foreign language productions. I love the miracle of multiple audio tracks and subtitles.

Netflix adds new seasons and debuts new shows this week

I haven't read through my EULA lately, but I'm pretty sure that Netflix is contractually obligated to add at least one stand-up special every week. At least, that seems to be the case as we get the third special from a Netflix regular with Chelsea Handler: The Feeling. As per usual with Ms. Handler, expect biting commentary and a lot of talk about - let me check the room for minors - "S E X."

That's it for Tuesday. Wednesday brings us three shows. First up is season 2 of I Survived a Crime, a series that originally aired on the A&E network. This season has just 12 episodes as opposed to season 1's 24, so I'm thinking, A: There's now less crime; B: Crimes aren't being captured as often; C: People are less willing to share their harrowing experiences; or D: They ain't surviving. Yecch.

Million Dollar Secret sounds a lot more fun than ring camera footage of home invasions. Filmed at a posh lakeside estate in British Columbia (yay, Canada!), the series pits 12 strangers against each other in a battle of wits to hide - or discover - which one has been given a million dollars. The first three episodes arrive on the 26th, the next three the following Wednesday, with the series finale a week later. Dude, I'd just take the trip to B.C. and be happy.

My interest is locked in on the third of Wednesday's debuts, Caught. Based on Harlan Coben's novel Catch, it's the next step in the Cobenization of Netflix. Yes, I'm sure that's a real word. The six-episode series, an Argentinian production, follows a journalist investigating sexual predators. It isn't long before a respected community leader becomes a suspect, and much evil is revealed. Sadly, it is far too much like real life.

Thursday brings the three-episode documentary series Gold & Greed: The Hunt for Fenn's Treasure. Art dealer Forrest Fenn hid an honest-to-whoever-you-pray-to treasure chest in the mountains of New Mexico and left a poem as the clue to its location. Frankly, I'd prefer the one-in-twelve chance of just being handed a million bucks in a lakeside mansion.

We also get season 2 of the comedy-drama series Survival of the Thickest. The first season was a hit with viewers and critics alike. Lead actress Michelle Buteau has earned raves for her performance as a plus-sized woman - you know, an actual human - picking up the pieces of both her personal and professional lives after a breakup with a coworker/lover. Based on her essays, it's a deeply personal and often hilarious look at starting over at the age of - well, not 25 and dewy-eyed.

Speaking of dewy-eyed twenty-somethings, The Life List follows Alex Rose, as she completes a bucket list she wrote as a young teen. Okay, so she's a dewy-eyed thirty-something, whatever. Alex is played by Sofia Carson, who co-starred in the excellent thriller Carry-On. The source novel of the same title has excellent reviews, so I expect this will be pleasant and heartwarming entertainment.

Netflix closes out the week with the eight-episode series The Lady's Companion. Set in 1870's Madrid, it follows the Bridgerton formula, but with a twist. Companion is focused far more on those background characters who serve the posh and pompous figures of high society. Expect romance, drama, and comedy as it's been described as all three by various outlets. Expect to be entertained, and you won't be disappointed.
