Nemesis just lost a key member of the show ahead of season 2

By now, fans of Netflix's new hit crime drama series Nemesis have heard and celebrated the exciting news. Isaiah and Coltrane will be back, as Netflix has renewed Nemesis season 2. Following the show's successful launch in May 2026, fans waited patiently to hear word about the show's fate, and we waited longer than expected when the announcement was finally made over one month later.

Currently, Nemesis season 2 is in active development for filming to hopefully begin before the end of the year, but given the latest update from the series, we might still be a bit away from cameras rolling. Before season 2 officially kicks off with preparations, a new report reveals that an important member of the show's team has exited the series for a very frustrating but understandable reason.

Nemesis season 2 loses showrunner Courtney A. Kemp

As reported by The Ankler earlier this month, Nemesis creator and showrunner Courtney A. Kemp has unfortunately stepped down as the showrunner for season 2. Kemp will remain on the series as the creator and executive producer, though she will not be able to continue her duties as the showrunner at the helm due to a new overall dealing at a competing streamer.

Earlier this year, in March 2026, Kemp, who's also the creator of the popular Power franchise, signed a new overall deal with Apple TV. Because of this new exclusive deal at Apple, the writer and producer's new home for television and film projects, Kemp isn't able to be the showrunner of a series on Netflix. It's unfortunate, but that's how the television business works with exclusive overall deals.

Kemp's overall deal with Apple was signed following her previous overall deal with Netflix expired. The writer teamed up with Netflix for a four-year overall deal back in August 2021, which came on the heels of Kemp's previous overall deals at Lionsgate. Nemesis ended up being the only creation to come to fruition during Kemp's time at Netflix, but that's quite the way to go out.

Per The Ankler's report, Netflix hasn't named a new showrunner for Nemesis season 2 just yet, though with the new season in development, the decision should be made soon. The second season won't be getting a total behind-the-scenes overhaul as Kemp's fiancé Tani Marole, who co-created the show with Kemp, will remain aboard the series as a writer and executive producer.

For those who might be worried that a showrunner change could negatively impact the series, a new showrunner isn't always bad news for a show. While history has shown us that bringing in a new leader to steer the ship can take a show in a new direction, that can actually be a good thing in certain cases. In this case, it's unimaginable that Nemesis will change much to be noticeable to fans.

While someone else will be taking Kemp's place leading the charge, Nemesis will continue to be the gripping cat and mouse chase viewers came to love in the first season. Matthew Law and Y'Lan Noel will reprise their leading roles as the driving force of the narrative.
