Nation with second-most viewed Netflix content might surprise you

One nation rules them all.

It should not come as any surprise that the United States creates the content that leads to the most Netflix views globally. The US produces by far the most movies and series, so even by default, the country would lead in views. But what ranks second in a new study by Ampere Analysis?

A good guess might be the UK, which produces series like Adolescence. And to be sure, this article is not about the quality of content. Each nation produces some worthy things to watch. Adolescence is great and should be seen, but it is not the only good program Netflix has from the UK.

Instead, South Korea is the actual number two, which leads the UK by a percentage point or two in the global viewing hours pie. Of course, that nation made Squid Game, whose second season at one point led every nation's most-viewed series in those countries where Netflix is available for streaming. But that series is not the only one driving the nation's views.

South Korean content ranks second to the US in most global views for Netflix

Other leading drivers of hours of watching from South Korean content include the first season of Squid Game (of course), Love Next Door: Season 1, and Crash Landing on You. Netflix has been wise enough to notice the trend, too. In 2023, the streaming giant committed to pouring $2.5 billion over four years into getting content created in the nation.

The best might still be to come. There will be a final season of Squid Game, but many other projects we do not know about yet might bring us as much enjoyment. Part of the excitement is not knowing what we are going to see soon. Much of it is bound to be great.

If you are keeping score at home, the UK ranks third globally in creating the most-viewed content. Japan is fourth. While the United States is destined to stay number one, South Korea taking a bigger piece of the viewership would not be surprising in the foreseeable future.
