Nate Bargatze's debut movie The Breadwinner brings the laughs to Netflix very soon

As the jam-packed summer movie season comes to an end after producing hits like The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Toy Story 5, we're getting into the part of the year with an even bigger rush of movies. The ones vying for awards. But we're also getting into the part of the year where we can start to catch up on the movies we missed over the past few months.

While other hits from the big screen have started to trickle onto various streaming services, it's Netflix's time to shine thanks to the streamer's deal with Sony. Inevitably, fans will be most looking forward to the latest Spider-Man blockbuster to hit Netflix, but before he swings onto our watch lists with his multi-billion-dollar smash, Nate Bargatze is bringing the laughs.

The Breadwinner being added to Netflix in September 2026

Nate Bargatze's debut movie as a leading man, The Breadwinner, begins streaming on Netflix in the United States on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026. Since the comedy drops on the streaming service on the weekend, it's the perfect movie to pick for movie night with friends and family. In case you didn't know, the movie is rated PG, so you don't have to worry about inappropriate content.

The Breadwinner might be something of a throwback for some millennials. The movie, which was co-written by Bargatze and Dan Lagana, features the common 1990s and 2000s (and even 2010s when it comes to certain sitcoms) trope of a father learning how to be a hands-on stay-at-home dad when his wife becomes successful and work takes her out of the house.

"Starring comedian Nate Bargatze as salesman Nate Wilcox and Mandy Moore as his wife, Katie. To Nate and their three children, Katie is the ultimate mom. But when her household invention leads to a once-in-a-lifetime deal on Shark Tank and takes her on a prolonged business trip, Nate must figure out how to keep the house from (literally) falling apart. Welcome to the dad era."

Naturally, that concept didn't win Bargatze many high marks with critics. The Breadwinner topped out with a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though the fan score is much higher at 85%. The film also seemed to struggle at the box office, just missing breaking even with a $20.2 million worldwide gross against its $25 million budget. But what it lacked at the box office, it will make up for on Netflix.

Apart from Bargatze's leading role, The Breadwinner also stars Mandy Moore, Colin Jost, Zach Cherry, Martin Herlihy, Kumail Nanjiani, Brett Cullen, Kate Berlant, and Will Forte. That's a great cast full of funny, familiar faces that are guaranteed to make you laugh, and don't forget the three kids playing the daughters of Bargatze and Moore's characters. Kids are always a secret weapon!

If you have been looking for a recent movie that's an excellent selection for the family to gather round together to watch, and that's also not animated, The Breadwinner looks to be something like a Cheaper By the Dozen or Daddy Day Care for a new generation.
