Netflix can do something many streaming services cannot. That includes bringing us fantastic series nearly full of lesser-known actors. The success of the show is not only good for Netflix, but also for the talent involved in creating the series.

When it comes to North of North, you might only know a few of the actors. Co-creators Stacey Aglok-MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril deliver excellence based on a culture that is often overlooked. Both are Inuit, and North of North is a comedy that follows the story of Siaja in the northern Canadian town of Ice Cover, Nunavut.

The population is 2,200, and many are Inuit. This includes the fictional series, as well as many of its actors. The show was also filmed in Iqaluit, Nunavut's capital. The combination of it all, plus the warm-hearted feel of the show, equates to excellence.

Who are the actors (and what are their characters) on the brilliant Netflix series North of North?

Anna Lambe as Siaja

Netflix

  • Age: 24 (September 25, 2000)
  • Height: 5'9"

  • Where else have you seen them?: True Detective season 4, Trickster, Three Pines
  • Fun facts: Born in Nunavut, the area where North of North is set. She looks a lot like Selena Gomez.

Who is Siaja? A young mother unhappy in her marriage to a husband unaware of anything but himself, Siaja leaves to find herself. She cannot afford to live on her own, but moves in with her mother, Neevee. She finds a job as an assistant to the senior administrative officer of the town's community center, and excels in her position.

Siaja has a seven-year-old daughter, but is learning her own value. She is also looking for love, but likely in the wrong places.

Maika Harper as Neevee

  • Age: 38

  • Height: Unknown

  • Where else have you seen them?: Kim's Convenience, Mohawk Girls, Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent
  • Fun facts: Wrote a book called The Walrus and the Caribou (which can be found in English and Inuktitut), born in Nunavut, has two children

Who is Neevee? A seemingly hardened-by-life shop owner who is distrustful of most people. She loves her daughter, Siaja, and her granddaughter, Bun, fully, though. Her commitment to keeping people at arm's length affects her personal relationships, such as with Alistair.

Jay Ryan as Alistair

  • Age: 43 (August 29, 1981)

  • Height: 6'1"
  • Where else have you seen them?: Neighbours, Sea Patrol, Beauty and the Beast (TV series), It Chapter Two

  • Fun facts: Born in New Zealand, but is now a Canadian citizen, has one daughter.

Who is Alistair? As it turns out, he is Siaja's father, though Neevee did not let her daughter or Alistair know about each other until he comes back to Ice Cove to do more work. He is a good-hearted character who often does the opposite of what viewers might expect, and he is in love with Neevee.

Mary Lynn Rajskub as Helen

Netflix

  • Age: 43 (June 22, 1971)
  • Height: 5'6"
  • Where else have you seen them?: Punch-Drunk Love, 24, Little Miss Sunshine
  • Fun facts: Also a comedian, has one son.

Who is Helen? When we first meet Helen, she seems as if she could be the most unlikeable and predictable character on the show. The creators wrote her otherwise, and Rajskub plays her brilliantly. She wants the town to run well and cares about the people in her role as the senior administrative officer of the community center. Her role basically works as the mayor of the town.

Braeden Clarke as Kuuk

Netflix

  • Age: Not announced
  • Height: Unknown
  • Where else have we seen them?: Little Bird, Run Woman Run
  • Fun facts: From the Mikisew Cree First Nation in Alberta, Canada, won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Drama Series (Little Bird)

Who is Kuuk? Kuuk is an assistant to Alistair and new to Ice Cove, but sees himself as not accomplishing as much in life as he initially expected. Like Alistair, he is a highly likable character. He has a crush on Siaja, but events keep them apart. That includes Kuuk not being able to tell Siaja exactly how he feels about her.

Kelly William as Ting

  • Age: Not announced

  • Height: Unknown

  • Where else have you seen them?: The Scribe of Samhain, Motherland: Fort Salem
  • Fun facts: Currently producing a short film called Choices

Who is Ting? Ting is extraordinarily self-serving and incapable of thinking about others, especially his estranged wife, Siaja. He goes so far as to call himself King Ting. His role would be equivalent to that of a homecoming king in high school. We both dislike and love Ting, though. The last part is mostly against our will.

Bailey Poching as Colin

  • Age: Not announced
  • Height: Unknown
  • Where else have you seen them?: Kid Sister
  • Fun facts: Born in New Zealand and is a native Māori

Who is Colin? The town's DJ at the community center, Colin, came from New Zealand to live in Ice Cove. He is primarily a level-headed friend to Siaja, although he does have bouts of needed brutal honesty with her. Colin does so in a supportive way, though, so he is completely trusted by others.

Nutaaq Doreen Simmonds as Elisapee

  • Age: Not announced
  • Height: Unknown
  • Where else have you seen them?: True Detective season 4
  • Fun facts: From Alaska, and is an activist. This includes working as an advisory board member for Sovereign Iñupiat For A Living Arctic. She only has two acting credits: North of North and True Detective.

Who is Elisapee? The community center receptionist and Elder at her church, she is devout in her Christianity. This sometimes causes issues with blunt honesty, though never to the level of being antagonistic. She doesn't like Neevee, but she loves Siaja.
