John Mulaney fights three teenage boys (and was it worth it)

An interesting idea?

Netflix's Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney's finale was what you expect. In other words, if you didn't know what to expect, other than that the comedian was going to fight some teenage boys, then you were spot on.

Mulaney has tried to do different things with his talk show instead of the same worn-out formula of everything else we see at 11:30 pm ET on weeknights for decades.

Mulaney is a funny guy, but slightly odd. He is sometimes intentionally off just a beat, and that makes him different. There are loads of stand-up comedians, and finding a way to be different is important. Mulaney has done that.

How good was the finale of Netflix's Everybody's Live with John Mulaney?

And that kind of idiosyncratic style transposes to his talk show. He has the guests he wants to have, even if they aren't always A-listers. He invites unusual musical guests to appear, and good for him for doing so. But Mulaney can also stray into Andy Kaufman-type stunts as well.

Such was the case in the season finale when the comedian did go through with fighting three teenage boys (sort of). He had teased the event for weeks, but the idea of it is odd. A grown man fighting anyone, especially teenagers, screams of desperation. This is especially true if one is trying to get viewers on a TV show.

The situation came to be based on the silly viral social media question of whether 100 men could beat one gorilla. Mulaney's take is whether one 42-year-old comedian could beat up three teenage boys.

Was the fight staged? We hope so. One could have guessed that Mulaney was going to lose against the trio termed "Three Truant Teens." The boys wore headgear, and Mulaney was never going to do anything to cause harm, rightfully so.

The scenario unfolded in a wrestling ring with a referee there to observe. The bell rang, the boys rushed the comedian, they dropped him to the mat, one teenager put Mulaney in a headlock, and the comedian tapped out.

Was it funny? It was weird. Or, in other words, it was a perfect ending to the first season of Mulaney's strange show.
