NBC's sci-fi drama La Brea landed on Netflix in May 2026 and has become one of the streamer's most popular shows. Here's what to watch next!

Each month, Netflix releases a number of new series and movies, including its own original content and that which it acquires from other studios and networks. Most of the time, we can predict which titles will rise through the ranks and take the Top 10 by storm, but other times, the hits completely take us by surprise. We can't say that we're surprised La Brea is a hit, though.

The short-lived NBC science fiction drama series La Brea brought all three of its seasons to Netflix in May 2026, debuting on the platform right at the top of the month. Naturally, the twisty series didn't waste any time bursting onto the Top 10, rising to the No. 3 position as of May 4. Viewers were hungry and ready for a mysterious escape to dive into, and that's exactly what the show delivers.

La Brea centers on a group of Los Angeles residents who are swept up into a sinkhole and transported to a whole new world. As it turns out, that a whole new world is 10,000 BC and they need to find a way home. Between spacetime portals and other time travel twists, the series offers a nonstop adventure. Ready for your next one? Here are three Netflix shows to watch now!

Manifest (2018-2023)

What's better than one sci-drama about a group of unsuspecting people transported through time than two sci-fi dramas about a group of unsuspecting people transported through time? There are some definite similarities between La Brea and Manifest, especially including that they both originated from NBC. However, La Brea premiered the fall after NBC canceled Manifest.

While the current Netflix sensation follows a group swallowed up by the ground, Manifest centers on a flight of passengers who take off in the year 2013 and land five and half years later. The Flight 828 passengers have to piece together what happened to them, why they seem to have new special abilities, and find out whether they actually want to go back to 2013.

After NBC canceled Manifest in June 2021, Netflix picked up the series for a fourth and final season following the show's rampant success on the platform. The final season might be the wildest season of the series, taking the story to new sci-fi heights and landing the plane (literally and figuratively) with a memorable series finale. Check it out after La Brea if you managed to miss it before!

Dark (2017-2020)

From one short-lived sci-drama to another, Dark is by far one of the best Netflix shows to watch when you finish binge-watching La Brea. They have a lot in common, even beyond the fact that they both have three seasons. There's an element of time travel in both series and a whole lot of mystery that will have you hooked and on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

Dark made its premiere on Netflix back in 2017 as its first German-language original series and was a runaway hit with fans. The series takes place in a fictional small town as four families reel from the shocking consequences and truths revealed after a child disappears, which reveals a generations-long conspiracy. It's a deep and, yes, dark series that's gripping and chilling.

You might see the fact that Dark has only three seasons and wonder whether Netflix canceled the show before its time and it ended on a cliffhanger. Well, feel free to add this one to your watch list because there's no cliffhanger to be found. It might leave you wanting more like all good shows, but there's complete story that's told across all three seasons, just like La Brea.

Stranger Things (2016-2025)

Is Stranger Things the obvious choice? Yes. Has the majority of the world already watched the show? Also yes. But is it still the ultimate sci-fi Netflix show? Yes! It would be blasphemous to make a list of sci-fi Netflix shows and not include the most famous example of one. After all, now that the show has officially ended, it's the right time to do a complete rewatch from start to finish.

Because Stranger Things might be one of the most famous shows in the history of television, it's unlikely that we need to explain the plot. But it has a lot of the same elements as La Brea, Manifest, and Dark. There's a disapperance that opens up a mystery involving the concept of time. There are villains, fights between good and evil, and revelations that right some serious wrongs.

Stranger Things completed its nine-year run after five epic blockbuster seasons on New Year's Eve 2025 with a series finale that's likely one of the most talked about of all time. Whether you loved it or hated it, there's no doubt it left an impression you'll never forget. Now that some time has passed, take a return trip to Hawkins to see how the full, big picture comes into view.
