Who kidnapped Matthew and what was the reason?

While I Will Find You sends us on a wild goose chase alongside David and Rachel to figure out who kidnapped Matthew, it wasn't actually Boston mob boss Nicky Fisher. In actuality, Hayden Payne kidnapped Matthew for a reason he believes to be sound and just.

Hayden was in love with Rachel and wanted to start a family with her. Since the Paynes owned the Berg Reproductive offices, Hayden caught wind that Rachel was going through with an artificial insemination without him. However, her sister Cheryl was using her name.

Looking to ensure he was the father of Rachel's baby, Hayden paid Dr. Heller to impregnate her with his sperm donation. Obviously, Rachel was never part of the equation, and Cheryl was already pregnant with Matthew, David's baby, before even going through with the procedure.

When Hayden met Matthew five years later at a 4th of July party with Rachel, he was sure he needed to be his father. He killed Martin Bischof, a Swiss boy with a terminal illness, and placed him in Matthew's bed after kidnapping him, leading to David being framed for his son's murder.

But there's even more to the story. Hayden was convinced that Mathew, who he renames Theo, was his biological son. His mother, Gertrude, lied to him about the results of the paternity test. When Hayden learns the real truth, he shoots and kills his own mother for betraying him.

Does David find Matthew in I Will Find You?

Perhaps the more pressing question posed by the series, because it's the title after all, is whether David actually finds Matthew. The quick answer is yes, David does indeed find Matthew and reunite with his son. But it's not without a hard-fought battle against Hayden.

Gertrude isn't the only major character who dies in the I Will Find You finale. Hayden also meets his end with a gunshot from Agent Greer during the final showdown. He dies before he can shoot Rachel and after he shoots David. (Various guards, Stavros, and David's dad Lenny also die in the finale.)

David was able to bring Matthew to safety with help and backup from Greer, though Hayden nearly ran off with him again. The final battle occurs in the woods, and it's devastating that Matthew had to watch Hayden die, since he was raised by him, and David also nearly die.

In the end, Matthew reunites with his whole family and slowly begins the process of healing from his kidnapping and trying to remember who he was before he was taken at five years old. David was also exonerated thanks to the truth being revealed through a DNA test Cheryl sanctioned, confirming Matthew wasn't the one who was killed and David is innocent.

Rachel writes a book about the family's experiences surrounding Matthew's kidnapping, which she titles Found. During Lenny's wake, I Will Find You leaves us with one final mystery: Whether David and Rachel are now romantically involved. The series ends with the pair holding hands.
