I completely forgot this Twilight show existed before Netflix renewed it for season 2

Netflix has made a surprising decision about a Twilight project that hasn't even premiered yet, and it's one I honestly didn't see coming.

When it comes to Netflix shows, I’m pretty good with keeping up with the latest news and updates for the streaming service’s many original shows. After all, it is sort of my job to stay up-to-date on the latest Netflix developments, which is why my Netflix queue is never empty and I’m always checking out some new Netflix series or enjoying new episodes of returning favorites.

It’s not often that Netflix is able to surprise me these days, but I was certainly feeling a bit embarrassed this week when it was announced that Netflix had handed out an early renewal to a series that I had completely forgotten all about. Though, in my defense, the renewal was handed out to a Twilight series that was put into production back in 2024 and somehow still hasn’t even released its first season!

I’m referring to Midnight Sun, the upcoming animated series based on Stephenie Meyer’s 2020 companion novel to her best-selling book series Twilight. The animated series was first announced in September 2024 with Netflix ordering an animated adaptation of the companion novel told entirely from the perspective of Edward Cullen. Outside of the fact that Meyer was set to executive produce the series, little information was given about the show upon its initial announcement… and not much has changed in the two years since Midnight Sun was first announced.

We’ve yet to get any casting news for the series, and there is not even a release window for the show. It’s basically been crickets from Netflix, and for that reason, I had forgotten the show was even in development. I’ll admit, I sort of had thought Midnight Sun was quietly canceled, as it’s not uncommon for a series to be announced but stall in the development stage and never make it to the air. Perhaps that’s why it was so surprising to learn that not only is the show still in development, but Midnight Sun has reportedly already been picked up for a second season!

According to What’s on Netflix, during a recent Lionsgate earnings call, Kevin Beggs, Chairman of the Lionsgate Television Group, announced the show’s renewal when he confirmed that the series had gotten a two-season order from Netflix.

“That’s a 2-season adult animation order at Netflix. Stephenie and her team are very hands-on, really running the process along with us at Netflix,” Beggs revealed on the call, adding that Lionsgate had “high expectations” for the series, which it viewed as a “continuation and expansion” of the Twilight series.

Lionsgate clearly isn’t the only one with high expectations for the show, as Netflix is not one to renew shows before they even premiere. It’s clear that Netflix is betting big on Midnight Sun, and the season 2 renewal will likely help with production costs, as the two seasons can be filmed closer together rather than there being large gaps between the first season’s premiere and the start of production on season 2.

Hopefully, we’ll begin to finally get updates on the status of the series, including information about who will voice the franchise’s biggest characters. It’s unlikely that certain members of the cast will return to reprise their roles from the live-action films, but we imagine Lionsgate will try to get at least a few members of the cast to return for Midnight Sun.

Considering the 20th anniversary of Twilight’s release in theaters is fast approaching, we imagine Lionsgate and Netflix will work to streamline the series so that it is ready to premiere by the film’s anniversary.
