Since being added to Netflix back in 2014, Gilmore Girls has remained a beloved and consistently rewatched staple on the streaming service. Each fall, fans flock to rewatch the show all over again, but there are also plenty of devoted fans who never take the series off a constant loop. The show means that much to us, which is why we never want to see it leave Netflix.

Throughout its decade and counting on the platform, there have been concerns that it would be removed. Most of the time, these worries spring from unverified rumors originating from social media that are meant to cause panic. But the latest rumor about Gilmore Girls potentially leaving Netflix very soon holds some weight, but there's still hope that things could swing our way.

Gilmore Girls fans worry the show will leave Netflix in July 2026

According to a report from What's on Netflix, there's a possibility that the seven original seasons of Gilmore Girls could be removed from Netflix in July 2026. (This would not include the Netflix original miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.) Note both "possibility" and "could." The show hasn't been given an official removal notice from the streamer yet, despite rumors already swirling on social media and searches coming up with supposed fact. Currently, its fate is unconfirmed.

As of this writing on June 8, there is no tag on the show's official page on Netflix with a warning of its impending departure date. Should an official date be set, that's where fans would be seeing one and then it's time for frustration. Until then, there's a chance that Gilmore Girls isn't even planned to be removed or the streamer and Warner Bros. are working behind the scenes for quick fix.

Even though the major studios have been trying to reclaim exclusive streaming rights to some of their biggest hits for their own streaming services, it's unimaginable that Warner Bros. Television can deny the unique popularity Gilmore Girls has on Netflix. It's because of the show's success on the platform that the 2016 revival series A Year in the Life even exists in the first place.

While Gilmore Girls is also currently available to stream on Hulu (and therefore Disney+ with a bundle subscription), Netflix is the first place most fans think of when it comes time for a rewatch. It's unclear how long Netflix's license, and also Hulu's, lasts for the show and what the new terms would be for renewing either or both streaming licenses. But Netflix's position feels too lucrative for the show.

If the worst case scenario does happen and Gilmore Girls season 1-7 leave Netflix in July 2026, it's not as if the show will never be available to watch or stream again. The complete series has been released on both DVD and Blu-ray and the show has never left syndication on the small screen. In addition to streaming on Hulu for the time being, the show could also land another streaming home.

In the event of departing Netflix, Gilmore Girls would almost certainly become available on HBO Max. Like Friends, having the series on the WB-owned streamer would be a massive draw, especially if streaming access becomes exclusive. It's a toss up right now and nothing has been confirmed, but we'll continue to share news and updates as they are announced by Netflix!
