If you were to line up all the streaming services, who would you say has the best teen shows? For us, it's Netflix hands down. Its teen series just click, and they get that being a teenager isn’t neat, easy, or predictable. Life at that age is messy, chaotic, full of heartbreak, crushes, awkward moments, big emotions, and mistakes that feel way bigger than they actually are. And Netflix's teen shows don’t shy away from any of it.

Back in May 2025, the streaming giant released the teen series Forever, and it instantly became a hit. It was such a success that Netflix renewed it for a second season just a week after its release. Since then, fans have been anxiously waiting for updates on the next installment. However, it's been pretty much radio silence.

Well, that's until now. We finally have an update on where Forever season 2 is in the filmmaking process, and we're excited to share what we know down below.

The writers room is open for Forever season 2

In a recent interview, Deadline got the opportunity to speak with series creator and showrunner Mara Brock Akil about Forever and its upcoming season, and she shared that she and the show's creative team are already deep into developing season 2 in the writers room.

"I mean, they sat down for eight hours, or however long it is — eight episodes, and they let Netflix know ‘More of this, please.’ It put a lot of gas in the tank for Season 2. And we’re very excited. We’re already in the writers room. Things are gelling.”

This shouldn't be that surprising of an update. Although we hadn't heard anything about the second season since its renewal, it was pretty much a given that things were happening behind the scenes. However, now we have that confirmation straight from the source. Following this stage of the filmmaking process, we can expect the show to soon move into production.

We probably won't hear about the cameras rolling on the second season by the end of this year, given that we're already in December. It's possible, but more realistically, filming will probably kick off sometime early next year. That said, we're hoping Forever season 2 will also be given a 2026 release. It's not a show that requires special effects or massive set pieces, so the turnaround from production to release could be relatively quick.

Another exciting update that Akil shared with Deadline is that fans don't have to worry about Forever season 2 switching up its leads. She confirmed that Justin and Keisha, the main couple from season 1, will continue to be the focus in season 2. That means you can expect to see Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone reprise their respective roles. However, she deliberately avoided giving plot spoilers for the second season.

"I can offer this — we will be following Justin and Keisha, as opposed to moving to a new couple. I think we have more to say with them before we pivot in a new direction.”

Forever season 1 ended with high school sweethearts Keisha and Justin no longer a couple and deciding to explore their individual paths as young adults. Keisha went off to Howard University for college, and Justin decided to take a gap year to work on his music portfolio. But with a love as strong as theirs, they are bound to get back together. We're just curious to see how that will play out.
