Netflix is great. We know this. We subscribe to it even though maybe we complain about the price. We get our money's worth.
But let's be real, the streamer is not the only service we pay money to see. Maybe we have a separate (secret) account for Hulu. We don't tell our friends this, of course. We do not want to cheat on Netflix.
But there are other non-Netflix series to watch of value. The good thing is that our favorite streaming service will likely rule the world one day and all shows ever will be available to us there. We cannot wait until these five are.
Five great shows we wish were streaming on Netflix right now
White Lotus
Entering its third season on (shhh...) Max, White Lotus is a ridiculously consistently great show. Mike White created the series and it might have become far more beloved than anyone expected. An ever-changing show about tropical resorts where the guests are completely messed up seems elitist. White has a way of bringing these people down to our (i.e. normal people) level.
Season three kicks off on Sunday, and part of the cast involves Walton Goggins. He alone is going to make the series worth watching. Parker Posey is also in it. We are in for a treat, but we just wish it was on our favorite streamer.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
One thing Netflix lacks but (and again, shhhh...) Max has is a fantastic "live" news show. There is a good reason for this as those kinds of programs could be hella boring and pointless. Oliver's show is the funniest take on news since the heyday of John Stewart on The Daily Show. Of course, Oliver kind of started there as well.
Mad Men
It makes sense for Mad Men to stream on Netflix one day soon (and once was). It's stuck on Amazon Prime currently. No matter where the series ends up, one should follow it from streamer to streamer and re-watch it over and over. Jon Hamm's Don Draper character might be the greatest anti-hero in television history, but the other characters are incredibly interesting. No show ever has any business being this good as the one about a bunch of ad execs on Madison Avenue and their personal dramas.
All Creatures Great and Small
Masterpiece on PBS (and the BBC) has a way of cranking out great series. This is not only recently, but seemingly since the earth cooled. All Creatures is just one of the latest. Taken from James Herriot's books about taking care of animals around the time of the second World War, the production value on this latest series (there have been previous editions) is elite. So is the acting.
NFL Sunday Ticket
We might have to pay extra for this, but Netflix proved it could pull off live NFL coverage on Christmas Day when it broadcast two games. One even had Beyonce performing at halftime, and that is the trick Netflix can pull that others cannot. We might be able to take the excellent halftime entertainment from NFL games, and watch them as standalones on Netflix. It will happen one day.
