This post contains spoilers from Emily in Paris season 5 from this point forward.
Emily in Paris season 5 has finally arrived, and it's by far the juiciest season of the Netflix original romantic comedy series yet! Now settled in Rome and in a stable relationship with Marcello, Emily believes she's got it all figured out. Naturally, she couldn't be more wrong and the twists and turns — and longing for Paris — soon start to rock the boat.
Because Emily has been in her fair share of love triangles throughout the series, the biggest question on everyone's mind by the end of a new season is "Who does she end up with?" This season, she's in a love triangle between Paris and Rome, but that doesn't mean there still aren't questions to be answered about what happens to Emily romantically in season 5.
Does Emily end up with Marcello in Emily in Paris season 5? How does Gabriel proceed with wanting to get Emily back? Who gets engaged in the season finale? Let's dive right into the ending of season 5 and explain what happens for Emily and more characters!

Emily and Marcello break up in Emily in Paris season 5
Throughout the course of Emily in Paris season 5, Emily and Marcello actually break up twice. The first break-up occurs in Rome, when Emily's successful marketing campaign for Marcello's family business brings an excessive amount of tourists to Solitano. While his mother is appalled by the foot traffic in her hometown, Marcello finds it as leverage to move his business over to JVMA.
Emily realizes that she and Marcello were secrely competiting when it comes to their careers, and she views this as him not only lying to her but not putting her first. She leaves Solitano without another word and returns to Paris newly single. However, after sending Gabriel off on his new job as the private chef of a billionaire on his yacht, Marcello comes back into Emily's life.
They run into each other in public and air out their problems in a large group of people. She learns that he left his family's company and moved to Paris with the intention of working with Nicolas on launching his own fashion house, not to compete with his family but to have something of his own. As they start going on double dates with Mindy and Nicolas, they settle the past and get back together.
Because nothing ever goes to plan for Emily, Marcello's fashion line launch isn't without hiccups, leading him to become the main designer. She pushes him to realize his potential, which causes strain between the couple. During their trip to Venice for his line's debut fashion show, his mother arrives and adores his work. She drops the lawsuit and invites him back to Muratori.
However, while back in Italy, Emily had spotted an engagement ring in Marcello's bag and believed he was set to propose. She was ready to say yes, believing they could start a new life and career partnership in Paris. But when Marcello's excited to move back to Rome with Emily, she realizes that although she loves him, she doesn't want to leave Paris. Thus break-up #2.
As it turns out, Marcello wasn't planning to propose to Emily, but she denied his proposal anyway. It makes for an awkward situation when Marcello hands the ring to Nicolas and proposes to Mindy. Emily and Marcello officially split, but Mindy's newly engaged. (Alfie isn't thrilled to hear about it, and Emily realizes they still have feelings for each other.) There's one more twist for Emily.

Do Emily and Gabriel end up together in season 5?
Although Gabriel followed Emily to Paris in the beginning of the season, he decided not to interfere with her happiness with Marcello. He truly feels happy when he decides to resign from his restaurant and become a billionaire's private chef on the open seas. But he makes one more moment of contact with Emily that proves their sparks are very much still alive.
Gabriel calls Emily to ask if she can meet him at a train station and deliver the knives he left behind. They only have an hour to catch up over lunch, and compared to where they were last season after breaking up, both of them seem to have grown and evolved thanks to their latest experiences while apart. Gabriel gets on his train and leaves Emily behind (almost seemingly like he's leaving the show).
When Gabriel learns from his boss that he will have a week off to himself in Greece, he also receives a text message from Sylvie that Emily's not only back in Paris but she's single, too. Keeping his promise to send Emily a postcard, he invites her to join him in Greece. The season ends with Gabriel looking out into the ocean with a smile on his face. Will Emily go to Greece to be with Gabriel?
It's highly likely that even though Agence Grateau is in a state of chaos with Princess Jane joining the team to save the company from going under, Emily will still manage to find time to sneak away to rekindle her flame with Gabriel. She probably wants to spend time alone after her break-up, but Mindy and Sylvie are the kind of friends to push her to go and see what happens.
Just when we had called off the Emily and Gabriel endgame agenda, the Emily in Paris writers have cleverly and expertly dug themselves out of the hole and breathed new life into this pairing. Finally, Emily and Gabriel have a path to being together. Sure, there will still be challenges in future seasons, but they are both in a place where they have matured. Let's see what the next chapter brings!
