Stranger Things 5 is only a few weeks away, and the Duffer brothers are promising answers to questions fans have had since the beginning of the series.
With Stranger Things 5 being the final season, that should bring a lot of relief for fans who have been watching since the series premiered in the summer of 2016.
Almost one decade later, the Duffer brothers told Entertainment Weekly they have plans to answer those original questions about Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and the Upside Down in the final season.
Here's what Matt Duffer told EW:
"So much of the season was built around the idea of coming full circle, answering many of the questions that were posed all the way back in season. I think the two biggest questions that we didn’t really answer in season 1 that we do answer this season is ‘what is the Upside Down, truly?’ and ‘why was Will taken?’”
There are so many theories about both of those questions, but the idea that we'll finally figure out what specifically the Upside Down is, why, in season 4, it was stuck on Nov. 6, 1983, the day Will went missing, and why exactly Will was targeted.
I know I'm not alone in wanting answers to those questions. We still don't know, four seasons in, what the Upside Down really is. We still really have no idea why Will was picked in season 1.
I'm almost done with my Stranger Things rewatch before the final season, and there are a lot of weird things that happen in the first season regarding Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), how she knows Will is missing, how she knows that things aren't looking good for Barb before she actually finds Barb in the Upside Down, and more. There are a lot of similarities to the Demogorgon, we assume, opening the lock on the Byers' house while looking for Will and what Eleven does when she returns from Chicago and shows up at the Byers' house at the perfect time.
Then, we have all that business with Vecna, the battle in the Rainbow Room, and Eleven opening the gate to the Upside Down that she sends Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower), also known as One through.
Still, there's so much that we just do not about the Upside Down, Eleven's connection to it, and how Vecna used it for his purposes. We also don't know why Will is such an important part of this story. We know he continues to have some kind of connection with the Upside Down, the Mind Flayer, Vecna, etc, but the big questions are why and how.
Based on the Stranger Things 5 trailer, which ends with Vecna telling Will that he's going to use him "one last time," we're going to find out. I just hope it all makes sense. Knowing how good the Duffer brothers are as writers, along with the rest of the Stranger Things writing team, I have no doubt we're going to get the answers we need.
And, those answers will probably come soon! Stranger Things 5 Vol. 1 premieres on Wednesday, Nov. 26. The first four episodes will be released at that time. Then, we'll get the next three episodes on Christmas Day (Dec. 25) in Vol. 2, followed by the Stranger Things 5 finale on New Year's Eve (Dec. 31).
