This post contains spoilers from Stranger Things 5 volume 2 from this point forward.

The second batch of Stranger Things 5 episodes have arrived on Netflix as the best Christmas present we've ever received, and jumping off that epic volume 1 finale, we had so many questions still to be answered. One of those burning questions we had going into volume 2 involved the future of Nancy and Jonathan's relationship and whether he gained the courage to pop the question.

In Stranger Things 5 volume 1, Nancy and Jonathan's relationship was rather strained, and the jealous competition between him and Steve didn't help endear Nancy to her long-time boyfriend. We can also forgive her for not focusing on her personal life when the world and her family was crumbling before her very eyes. She had bigger priorities than sorting out her relationship.

However, the first volume revealed that Jonathan tracked down an engagement ring with help from Murray with the intention of asking Nancy to marry him. We see him awkwardly and anxiously looking at the ring multiple times waiting for the right moment to pop the question, but does it ever come? Volume 2 gives us an update on their future together, but only proceed if you want spoilers!

Are Nancy and Jonathan engaged in Stranger Things 5 volume 2? Well...

Unfortunately, Nancy and Jonathan finally face the facts of the state of their relationship and decide to amicably break up in Stranger Things 5 volume 2. They still love each other, but they realized that the problems in their relationship are almost too insurmountable to repair at this point, especially with the much larger issues at hand with Vecna and the impending merging of worlds.

After Nancy shoots at the exotic matter above Hawkins Lab in the Upside Down, she and Jonathan are blasted and things begin to melt. They end up trapped inside of a room, and when they wake up, the walls begin to melt and they fear that there's nothing they can do but prepare to die together. Thus inspires the couple to speak honestly with each other and confess things they'd held inside.

From not liking his favorite band to not enjoying reading her work, to not applying to the same schools to lying about needing space during spring break in season 4, Nancy and Jonathan put everything out in the open, which oddly brings them closer together. It's like a sigh of relief for them both, especially when Jonathan reveals that he's been holding onto an engagement ring.

He admits that he thought getting engaged would fix everything between them, but he has since realized that getting married wouldn't have solved any of their problems. Jonathan asks Nancy if she will not marry him. That's when they say "I love you" to each other. When he tosses the engagement ring to the side, it bounces on the floor, which is when they realize the melting has stopped.

That's the power of truth and love! Well, we don't actually know how or why the melting stopped, but Nancy and Jonathan live to see another day, just not together. Nancy also doesn't seem all that inclined to want to start a new relationship with Steve either. She references Steve wanting to have six children, which doesn't seem like something that's on her life's to-do list.

So, there you have it! In Stranger Things 5 volume 2, Nancy and Jonathan do not get engaged and have seemingly broken up. Whether they have broken up for good remains to be seen and will surely be revealed in the series finale episode released on Netflix on New Year's Eve.
