It’s been over two years since Netflix announced Extraction 3 was officially happening, and it sounds like we could have to wait quite a while before the third film actually comes together.
During the 2023 TUDUM event, Extraction star Chris Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave revealed to fans that a third film in the franchise was officially in development. The news immediately created excitement among fans and the assumption was that a plan was already in place for where the franchise would go next.
One year later at 2024’s San Diego Comic-Con, Hemsworth told Screen Rant that the creative team was in the “middle of putting it together” and that they were working to “crack the story.” Well, fast forward to August 2025, and it seems work on the film has stalled with little progress made in the last year.
“He’s getting restless. He is. My inner Tyler Rake is feeling a certain amount of protest and needs to be released, for sure,” Hemsworth joked in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter when asked if he’s checked in with his Extraction character lately, before sharing a disappointing update on the film’s progress. “We, the creative team, are putting together some different ideas and creative ventures of where we could take the whole place and the [third] film,”
Yes, it’s good to know that the creative team is working on crafting a story for Extraction 3. Our concern is that it sounds like the team hasn’t made much progress in the last year. When Hemsworth updated fans in 2024, he stressed that the creative team was trying to crack the story and yet, one year later, his latest update suggests they’re still trying to sort out exactly where the film would take Rake next.
Hemsworth did assure fans that “the intention is certainly to make [another] film; however, he made it clear that he’s unsure when exactly that might be.
“The intention is to certainly make another one. I don’t know exactly when, but yeah, it’ll be coming,” Hemsworth promised.
Fans could be waiting a while for Extraction 3
Given Chris Hemsworth’s latest update that the creative team is still working to iron out the story for the film and his comment that he doesn’t know when the film will be coming, it seems reasonable to assume we’re going to be waiting a while for Extraction 3. In fact, we could be waiting until at least 2027 for the third film in the franchise to arrive on Netflix.
With the creative team still working on the script, it’s unlikely production will begin in 2025 as you have to have a script before filming can start. Once the script is ready, there’s the matter of building the cast for the film and locking down a schedule for filming that will likely be contingent upon Hemsworth’s schedule.
Typically, filming on the Extraction movies has taken a few months, and then there have been several months of post-production. If filming can begin in 2026, that should provide the creative team with enough time to shoot the film and tend to post-production needs in order to release the film sometime in 2027.
The good news is that Hemsworth remains very much invested in the franchise, so while it might take longer than we hoped for Extraction 3 to come together, it seems the film is still moving forward. All we can hope is that the wait will be worth it in the end.
