Bridgerton season 5 made the right call by choosing Francesca’s story next

By the time Bridgerton confirmed its season 5 lead, the decision was already narrowed down to two siblings. They were Eloise or Francesca Bridgerton. And while some fans framed the final choice as surprising, it actually feels like the most natural progression the show could have made. Because if you’ve been paying attention, Bridgerton has quietly been building Francesca’s story for a while now.

Unlike the earlier seasons—where Francesca was largely absent—season 3 marked a turning point. That’s when the hit period drama finally began laying the groundwork for her arc. We followed her debut into society, her reserved personality, and the introduction of her romantic life.

It wasn’t a full-fledged spotlight, but it didn’t need to be. It was setup, and Bridgerton season 4 continued that trajectory by pushing her story forward in meaningful ways while still holding back the true emotional core of her journey. That kind of slow build is intentional, and it matters.

By the time Bridgerton season 5 arrives, Francesca won’t feel like a sudden shift or an underdeveloped lead. Instead, she’ll feel like a character whose story has been unfolding in the background, waiting for the right moment to take center stage. In that sense, choosing her now isn’t just a creative decision. It’s a payoff.

At the same time, it’s important to recognize what we haven’t seen yet. While Bridgerton has introduced key elements of Francesca’s life, her most defining chapter is still ahead. If you recall from the fourth season, Francesca loses her husband John in one of the most tragic ways. It was a turning point that fundamentally reshaped her life and set the stage for everything that is to follow.

And that’s where Bridgerton season 5 comes in. For the first time, the period drama has the opportunity to fully explore what happens after the fairytale ends. Francesca’s story in the highly anticipated fifth season won't be about the excitement of first love.

It’ll be about grief, healing, and the complicated reality of opening your heart again when you’ve already lost something meaningful. That emotional weight immediately sets her apart from the siblings who came before her. It also ensures that the series continues to evolve.

Five seasons in, sticking to the same romantic formula would be the bigger risk. But that won't be the case for Francesca’s story. Her arc will explore a different kind of love story. It'll explore one rooted in second chances rather than first impressions. The show will be a reimagining of her love story as depicted in the books.

By pairing Francesca with Michaela Stirling, Bridgerton is stepping into new territory with its first central queer romance. And rather than feeling like a gimmick, the change aligns naturally with the series’ ongoing mission to reframe traditional period dramas through a more inclusive, modern perspective.

Of course, this doesn’t mean Eloise is being sidelined. If anything, her story benefits from the delay. When her season finally arrives, it will carry more weight, more history, and more emotional payoff. In that sense, focusing on Francesca now isn’t a detour. It’s part of a larger plan.

Ultimately, the decision between Francesca and Eloise was never about choosing the “better” story. It was about choosing the right story for this moment in the series. And as Bridgerton looks to evolve beyond its early seasons, Francesca’s quieter, more emotionally complex journey feels like exactly what the show needs.
