Outer Banks season 4 introduced the Blue Crown, an ancient artifact that was coveted by Chandler Groff, the Corsairs, the Pogues, and many more during the season.

As legend has it, Blackbeard had the Blue Crown and left clues to its location around the Outer Banks and Southeast Coast of the United States. The Pogues get sucked into the hunt when Wes Genrette hires the Pogues to help him find the amulet that belonged to Elizabeth Teach to end a curse on the Genrette family after their treasure-hunting exploits of the first three seasons.

The hunt for the amulet leads the Pogues on a bigger adventure: the hunt for the Blue Crown. And that adventure takes the Pogues all the way to Morocco in the season 4 finale. JJ (Rudy Pankow) actually finds the Blue Crown, but tragically, Groff (J. Anthony Crane) kills him and steals the Blue Crown in the Moroccan desert.

The Blue Crown continues to play a big part in Outer Banks season 5, so let's talk about the Blue Crown, what it is, and if it really has magical powers.

What is the Blue Crown?

The Blue Crown is a fictional artifact created for Outer Banks. No, it's not real, but the creators looped in some real history into the story as they like to do.

In the story, the Blue Crown has been worn by some of the most famous rulers in history, including Darius the Great, Alexander the Great, and Julius Caesar.

As the legend goes, Blackbeard, the pirate, whose real name was Edward Teach, was searching for this Blue Crown. When he figured out where it was, he started dropping clues for his wife, Elizabeth, to follow. Those clues include her amulet and the Mogador Scroll, which leads the way to the Blue Crown.

Blackbeard never actually had the Blue Crown. He simply found out exactly where it was, and he happened to be right. Now, the artifact is worth millions of dollars by itself, but there’s a lot more to the lore of the Blue Crown.

Does the Blue Crown really work in Outer Banks season 5?

The Blue Crown is also alleged to have incredible powers, and one of those powers is that it can bring back the dead, which is obviously something that is very interesting to the Pogues. Unfortunately, it's not that simple.

The Blue Crown, as we learn in the fifth season, can only be used at a specific location at a specific time and with a specific incantation. That information about the location, time, and incantation can only be found on the scytale, which is also lost. Without the scytale, the Blue Crown is not going to work to bring back the dead.

So, that's what the Pogues, Groff, and Anton Finch (Jason Alan Carvell) and the Corsairs try to find.

In Outer Banks season 5, Groff has the Blue Crown, or what he thinks is the Blue Crown, and he heads to Dubrovnik, Croatia, to verify the artifact's authenticity. Then, it all goes wrong. Finch and the Corsairs track Groff to the city, and then, Medici, the artifact verifier, calls Finch and tells him exactly where the Blue Crown is. Finch swoops in, kills Medici, and steals the Blue Crown.

Still, everyone needs the scytale to move forward. After a wild goose chase, the scytale is found, and it's information is revealed. The Pogues and Finch know that to use the Blue Crown, they must go to Lake Yas'm Be, which is in modern-day Ganja, Azerbaijan, during the Perseids, which is a meteor shower, and say the magic words to make the dead arise.

As it turns out, the Blue Crown does have some sort of power. Kiara (Madison Bailey) goes to the lake during the meteor shower and recites the incantation. Instead of bringing JJ back from the dead, like physically, something magical happens that allows JJ, or his spirit, to remind her of all the good times they shared and to let go of all the bad.

After, John B (Chase Stokes) claims that they don't know what exactly happened, but Kiara changed after that day. So, no, the Blue Crown doesn't physically bring people back from the dead, which Kiara learned and Finch will actually learn soon enough. But, it does have some power, even if it's just psychological.

Thankfully, the Blue Crown saga ends before the end of the series and the Pogues have a chance to make it back to the Outer Banks for one final adventure. Well, a few final adventures, depending on how you look at it.
