3 biggest Netflix shows canceled in 2026

As much as we hope and wish that all of our favorite shows are able to end on their own terms, sometimes it just doesn't work out that way. Factors outside of our control, and even the control of the show, can impact a show's run and saddle them with the most dreaded word in the television industry: Canceled. Sadly, some big Netflix shows were hit with cancellation this year.

It's been a long-running joke that Netflix tends to cancellation a lot of its original programming, and while that might have been especially true not to long ago, the streaming service has actually had a much stronger renewal rate in recent years. Perhaps that's why the recent cancellations of a trio of beloved series have hit fans so hard beyond the obvious disappointment.

Netflix has also announced final seasons of shows like Emily in Paris, The Night Agent, The Lincoln Lawyer, and A Man on the Inside, but three of the streamer's original series weren't afforded a final season. These high-profile axings ended the series without resolution and leaving behind questions. We're rounding up and reflecting on Netflix's three biggest cancellations of the year (so far).

Sweet Magnolias

As of September 2026, Netflix's most recent and likely biggest cancellation belongs to Sweet Magnolias. The romantic drama series, which is based on the book series by Sherryl Woods, dropped its fifth season in June, but no one, not even the fans or cast, knew that it would be the last season.

Three months passed from the time season 5 premiered to when Netflix confirmed that the beloved series had been canceled, but the streamer's silence during that time spoke volumes. Sweet Magnolias returned with significantly lower viewership, meaning cancellation was on the table.

Because it was such a long-running show that fans loved, you'd think the series wouldn't be susceptible to a sudden cancellation. But we weren't so lucky. We won't be making a return trip to Serenity, South Carolina, to pour it out with Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue.

We didn't want to believe that we would be saying goodbye to the Sweet Magnolias without a real goodbye. However, the series won't be able to wrap up the loose threads that were left behind in the season 5 finale and we'll always wonder what could have happened.

The Boroughs

You wouldn't think that a series that only had one season would be referred to as one of Netflix biggest cancellations of 2026, but The Boroughs was so much bigger than its one season. The sci-fi drama came from the Duffer Brothers and had a star-studded cast of acting legends.

When the retirement home thriller arrived in late May, the expectations were high. After horror limited series Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, the series was the Duffers' first project that had the potential to stand up to Stranger Things after the pop culture phenomenon ended.

The Boroughs was very closely related to Stranger Things, the main difference being it centered on a group of older friends hunting down a chilling entity rather than a group of kids. Despite its modest debut, the series was well-liked and maintained a presence on the Top 10.

However, it just wasn't enough for Netflix to renew The Boroughs season 2. It's unfortunate that the potential the series had to tell more spooky stories. The silver lining, though, is that the series managed to wrap up its main story by the end of season 1 without leaving a major cliffhanger.

Ransom Canyon

Netflix also canceled the fan-favorite romantic drama series Ransom Canyon, which surely has fans worrying about the romantic drama genre on the streaming service. As far as the Western romance goes, it was already trailing behind Virgin River and Sweet Magnolias.

Another easy-to-watch series that was also based on a book, Ransom Canyon starred Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, two of the biggest names that have teamed up for one of Netflix's Hallmark-adjacent series. But the second season couldn't change the show's fate.

The fact that Ransom Canyon was even renewed for a second season should be looked at as a stroke of luck since the first season's viewership wasn't anything astronomical. Netflix reduced the episode count for season 2 and pushed for other creative overhauls that just didn't work.

If there's any positive to the show's cancellation it's that the ending finally got Duhamel and Kelly's characters together without stringing the viewers along any further. In that sense, it's a satisfying ending, even if other storylines were left unresolved. We can't get everything we want.
