Seven Seconds comes from the creator of The Killing and focuses on an investigation into a hit and run. This is a classic cop drama with all the familiar tropes and dirty cops trying to cover up something while prosecutors and the media try to get to the bottom of it. But where the show differs from the traditional cop drama is the racial tensions that arise when a new narcotics officer in New Jersey accidentally strikes a young African American teen, Brenton Butler, on his bike and leaves him for dead at the urging of his commanding officer.

The boy’s body is recovered and he’s rushed to the hospital where the responding officers thought he was in a gang because of the bike he was riding and because of what they suspected he was doing in the park where it’s known as a drug trafficking area.

The racial tensions spike when the dirty cops try to cover up the hit and run and when the boy’s mother, played by the always-brilliant Regina King begins searching for the truth and who really killed her son is what makes this series a must-watch. King is tremendous but the sleeper of the series is homicide detective Joe “Fish” Rinaldi, played by Michael Mosley who works alongside prosecuting attorney KJ Harper (Ashitey) who tries to overcome her own issues and self-sabotage to try to get justice for the Butler family.
