8. Forrest Gump

Release Year: 1994

Director: Robert Zemeckis

Starring: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Sally Field, Mykelti Williamson

The 1994 release of Forrest Gump was easily the best movie of the year and has stood the test of time more than two decades later as one of the best movies ever made. Tom Hanks won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the title character who came from humble beginnings in Alabama where he was teased for wearing leg braces and for being simpleminded.

He overcame it all to play football for Alabama, met the president at an All-American banquet, fought in Vietnam, created a successful shrimping business, inspired people all across the country just by running.

At the heart of this movie is a love story with Forrest and his childhood crush/best friend Jenny, played by Robin Wright, who Forrest defended, supported, loved his whole life. Jenny didn’t always love Forrest, but the two had an unspeakable and unbreakable bond.
