The 1987 Clive Barker directed and produced horror film is aggressively horrifying and gory. Without taking too much time to explain a complex plot, the movie is centered around a small puzzle box that if unlocked, releases some of the most evil beings and creatures imaginable.

Between a scorned lover and family affairs gone wrong, the puzzle box continues to be opened, literally raising hell.

The film was originally so explicit, Barker had to cut and alter scenes just to get a passing “R” rating. No matter what you think of the movie as a whole, one undeniable element is the imagery of things you aren’t even sure what to make of.

Hellraiser also spawned one of the most infamous horror characters ever in Pinhead. Growing up in the ’80’s and ’90’s, the sight of Pinhead was enough to change the channel or run out of the room. Like many others on the list, Barker’s film became a franchise and a cult classic.
