Stephen King’s Children of the Corn

Release Year: 1984

Directed by Fritz Kiersch

Starring: Peter Horton, Linda Hamilton, R.G. Armstrong

Stephen King’s Children of the Corn first appeared in a 1977 issue of Penthouse as a short story that was later adapted to film and released in 1984. A Physician and his girlfriend take a road trip across the Midwest to the town of his new job.

The couple discovers the dead body of a boy in the street and tries to contact the authorities, but what the couple discovers in the small town is horrifying stuff. There appears to be no adults and the town is run by a young preacher, to which all the other children follow.

The preacher Isaac Chroner is played by John Franklin, and goes down as an unforgettable character in horror movie history. Soon enough the couple realizes the children want to sacrifice them to their evil deity and must flee the town.  King’sChildren of the Corn was another horror film, like many others, that received negative reviews at the time of release.

Present day there are at least six other reboots of the series and the original has a true cult following.  This was the kind of movie that scared adults more than children in some cases due to the plot of a town where adults are sacrificed.

King was genius in his casting of the children, and much like Preacher Isaac Chroner, Malachai (Courtney Gains) is another character that etches his face and voice in your memory forever.  Cornfields were never looked at the same by horror fans after this franchise hit the market.
