No. 48 –The Lovely Bones  (2009)

Written by: Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens (screenplay)/Alice Sebold (novel)

Directed by: Peter Jackson

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Michael Imperioli, Saoirse, Ronan

Held up by an all-star cast, The Lovely Bones tells the story of Susie (played by Ronan), a 14-year-old girl murdered by her neighbor (Tucci), and the journey she takes between heaven and hell as she watches over her family’s investigation of her murder. Directed by Peter Jackson, who decided to take a break from hobbits and Gandalf, The Lovely Bones is a unique movie in the sense that it’s telling a very brutal story yet still manages to capture a sense of wonder as we follow Susie through the other side after she has died.

To be completely honest, The Lovely Bones is by no means a great movie, but it is a very good movie by the qualifications set in place. Although many of the characters aren’t fully fleshed out, some of them, mainly Stanley Tucci’s Harvey, get a chance to show sides to a very gruesome story other movies might not venture to tell. That makes it extremely watchable.

It’s memorability mainly stems from the fact that it has a great set of actors in it, and that allows it to cover up some of Jackson’s inconsistencies with the film’s tone. Although we know the crime committed, it still remains thrilling to watch as Susie’s family and friends, as well as Susie too, attempt to solve her murder before Harvey can escape.
