In The Ref, Lloyd and Caroline Chasseur (Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis), a married couple with their relationship on the fritz, are taken hostage by Gus (Denis Leary) in their own home after a robbery attempt goes wrong on Christmas Eve. There’s a big problem, though: The Chasseur family is on their way to Lloyd and Caroline’s house for dinner.

Overall, the film has a pretty dark premise for a Christmas movie. However, the film is playful in its tone and doesn’t seem to take itself to seriously, which is always good for a dark comedy.

If you’re a fan of dark comedy, The Ref is one of your go-to Christmas movies on Netflix this year. If you’re not interested in dark comedy and some disturbing sequences of events, I’d probably stay away from The Ref… The choice is yours…
