The Altruists: Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle to lead mysterious new drama

If you think crypto is a bit of a messy subject, just wait until you see The Altruists. It will be a bit before you can see the story unfold as a limited series on Netflix, but we are learning a bit more about who will make up the cast.

The leads, who will play Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, will be Anthony Boyle and Julia Garner, respectively. The streaming giant announced they will join the cast on Thursday.

The story follows the real-life events of the ironically named Bankman-Fried and Ellison, who tried to remake the international financial system. In the process, the two stole as much as $8 billion. Bankman-Fried was the CEO of FTX, and Ellison was his girlfriend and worked with Alameda Research, a crypto hedge fund.

Leads for Netflix's The Altruists have been cast

Of course, a story involving anything crypto is quite timely now due to the current United States administration and its involvement with cryptocurrency.

Bankman-Fried and Ellison were eventually charged with fraud and conspiracy, and Ellison cooperated with the investigation. None of this is a spoiler, of course, because the narrative of the two was so well known.

Still, there is such nuance to the story that an eight-part series is certainly worthy. They won't be likable characters, but the end of their fraud should be cathartic for many.

Viewers will know Garner from her work on the Netflix series Ozark as well as the Shonda Rhimes-created Inventing Anna. She has the ability to display strength while also not letting the viewer know everything that her character is thinking. She should be a perfect fit for Ellison.

You might also know Boyle, too. He has been featured in such series as Derry Girls and Tetris. He will also play Arthur Guinness in the upcoming series, House of Guinness.

Higher Ground Productions will produce the series for Netflix with Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt acting as showrunners and executive producers. The first episode will be directed by James Ponsoldt. Higher Ground has a good track record working with Netflix, creating such titles as Leave the World Behind and Rustin.

There is no timeline on the release date, of course, as filming has not yet begun. A 2026 release seems most logical.
