The awfulness of 2024 is almost over, Netflix fans! (OK, to be fair, maybe the year was not so bad, and possibly it was your best, but still.) We now get to look forward to what the streamer will bring us to start the new year. And there is so much good stuff, we will probably pack our excitement into lots of different articles on this site.
The list below are not all new films (one is), but they are new (or have returned) to Netflix. If you haven't seen three of them, why not? Never mind. You can see them in January.
The movie to avoid is one you will likely either love or hate. Just don't watch the movie that preceded it first. That only makes the sequel look ridiculously bad. In fact, because it is.
Three movies to catch on Netflix in January and one you should avoid (again)
Must-watch - Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (January 3)
This ditty has already been released in the UK, but American audiences will get to see it soon. If you loved films such as Chicken Run, or, well...any other Wallace and Gromit bit, you will love this one, too. The main premise is the return of Feathers McGraw with a new costume. There are lots of other madcap, but certainly not brainless, situations that occur. Basically, everything you love about the characters.
Must-watch - Field of Dreams (January 21)
Let's pretend for a second that you haven't seen this movie from the 1980s. Now is your chance to watch it free (with a Netflix subscription, of course). Tears will flow, laughs will be had, and the interactions between Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones are priceless. At the end of it all, you will simply want one more catch with your dad.
Must-avoid - Evan Almighty (January 17)
This movie takes most of the good stuff from Bruce Almighty and throws it in the trash. Whereas the original did not care if it was overly family-friendly, and that is part of why it was so funny, 2007's Evan Almighty tries to force its way into being the worst kind of Disney film. It is overly religious for no good reason and the silliness does not seem to carry any real weight. The shame is the cast is extremely talented and completely wasted.
Must-watch - Neighbors (January 1)
If you are not sure how you feel about Zac Efron before watching this gem from 2014, you might come away feeling he is pretty good at what he does. So is Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne. The film is so well cast that it might have been impossible for it to be a miss. Instead, we get a lot of bawdy humor grounded in a couple realizing they simply won't be as cool anymore.
