Best: You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah

In a year where we’ve had several excellent coming-of-age movies like Barbie and Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, a surprising one came in the form of an Adam Sandler-produced Netflix Original film called You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, based on the book of the same name by Fiona Rosenbloom.

The movie not only features Adam Sandler, but he actually takes a smaller role compared to his daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler, with Sunny taking center-stage as the pre-teen Stacy Friedman who wants to pull off the perfect bat mitzvah alongside her childhood best friend Lydia Rodriguez Katz (Samantha Lorraine). But when a boy comes between Stacy and Lydia’s friendship, it could upend their years long friendship and their epic bat mitzvah plans.

Directed by Sammi Cohen and written by Alison Peck, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is a great family-friendly comedy film and a truly touching coming-of-age movie. Sadie Sandler is truly a star and she performs exceptionally in this movie. Sandler’s wife, Jackie Sandler, is also in the movie as Lydia’s mom. It’s truly a Sandler family affair, but one thing this movie proves is that Adam Sandler might be wise to take a step back and let his daughters take the lead for a while.
