Worst: Murder Mystery 2

Murder Mystery 2 premiered on Netflix on March 31, and it’s the sequel to the first Murder Mystery movie starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston that premiered in 2019. Well, Sandler and Aniston are back as Nick and Audrey Spitz. After cracking the case and solving the murder in the first movie, Nick and Audrey find themselves framed again and must clear their names.

For the first movie, this premise made a lot of sense. Although a bit silly at times, Murder Mystery featured two charismatic stars racing around extravagant tourist spots of Europe. It was a bit much, but it was okay. When they did it a second time, it felt so stale. The jokes, the story, and the twists were so surface-level. There was an opportunity to do something bold and go deeper into these characters. Whodunit murder mysteries are the rage right now. When they’re done correctly, like in Knives Out, it’s amazing. When it’s done wrong, it’s Murder Mystery 2.

The only redeeming qualities of Murder Mystery 2 are its stars, Sandler and Aniston, and the film’s production value. Netflix spares no expense with Murder Mystery 2, and it feels more expensive than most Netflix comedies, which is a good thing. Sandler and Aniston do have excellent chemistry. It’s just a shame this movie never really came together.
