Worst: Bird Box Barcelona
From writer and directors Álex and David Pastor comes Bird Box Barcelona, a sequel to the 2018 movie starring Sandra Bullock, based on the book by Josh Malerman. And no, this one doesn’t have anything to do with Malerman’s actual novel sequel Malorie.
Bird Box Barcelona is based on a new idea from the Pastors. In a world that has been decimated by the mysterious invisible entities we first met in Bird Box, people have had to find new ways to survive and ensure they don’t fall prey to the beings that can make whoever sees them commit suicide.
However, there are some people who can see these entities and instead of dying, they become something known as “seers,” which is basically a type of person who starts doing the bidding of the entities by “saving” other people and ripping off their blindfolds, forcing them to see the things and succumb to a grisly fate. In Bird Box Barcelona, we follow a character named Sebastían and his daughter Anna as they travel together seeking safety.
But as we saw in the first movie, navigating this world is not as simple as it seems. Bird Box Barcelona started pretty strong with a very interesting twist in the first act, but sadly it all falls apart after that and while the first movie wasn’t exactly beloved by all, this one never really gets off the ground.
