Best: The Killer

The Killer might not be David Fincher’s best movie, but it’s still worth the watch. The thriller follows a hitman, played by Michael Fassbender, whose story is broken up into six chapters. After a job goes wrong, the titular character must figure out his next move in a very risky and dangerous situation involving other people.

There’s not necessarily much new when it comes to the story here, but the cinematography, score, and acting are what sets The Killer apart from other thrillers of 2023. There’s also consistent tension and unexpectedly humorous narration throughout the movie that keeps you engaged from start to finish.

Alongside Fassbender, the cast includes Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, and other talented actors. The attention to detail is absolutely fantastic, keeping you on your toes even when there aren’t big action sequences akin to other films in the genre. And the soundtrack is full of The Smiths? Definitely a pro!

Unfortunately, The Killer will go largely unnoticed when it comes to Fincher’s body of work, but that’s only because his past films are so iconic. This is no Fight Club, Gone Girl, or The Social Network, but The Killer has something to say — and at a conservative runtime of 118 minutes with a relatively simple plot, it’s not asking a lot of you. Especially compared to other movies released on Netflix in 2023, this one is a gem.
