These days, it’s pretty unclear how certain titles make it into our pop culture awareness and which ones are relegated to underrated status on arrival. The age of streaming is still a shape-shifting platform without rules set in stone, but the good thing is the consumer holds power with their views. This year’s hidden-gem family adventure flick Finding ‘Ohana should be on your watch list.

Finding ‘Ohana centers on Brooklyn pre-teen Pilialoha “Pili” Kawena (Kea Peahu), who finds herself suddenly in O‘ahu, Hawaii for the summer with her older brother to care for their grandfather. While in Hawaii, Pili finds an old journal that leads to an adventure to track down treasure with new friends as well as a chance to reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage.

Upon release in January 2021, Finding ‘Ohana earned mostly positive reviews from critics, holding an impressive 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although there are plenty of flashy new titles for families to watch together, nothing could be more fun for the whole family than a treasure-hunting adventure in Hawaii… or at least watching one from the comfort of your couch.
