Who doesn’t love to see Leighton Meester thrive? Everyone knows her as Blair Waldorf from the original Gossip Girl or the featured artist in that one Cobra Starship song or even the lead from the Single White Female remake with Minka Kelly. But she’s an amazing actress and singer and finally made her way to Netflix in 2022.

Leighton Meester stars in the thriller The Weekend Away, which is based on the novel of the same name, as Beth. The new mother vacations in Croatia with her best friend, Kate, who winds up going missing and is later found dead. In a crazy set of circumstances, Beth becomes the prime suspect in her bestie’s murder, and it’s a race to prove her innocence.

The Weekend Away received mixed reviews from critics, but the thriller is exactly what you want it to be: an hour-and-a-half of pure mystery escapism. Meester is great in the leading role, and the plot twists keep you invested until the very last second. What’s not to love here?

Obviously, it won’t be for everyone, but if you’re in the market for the movie equivalent of a beach read, then The Weekend Away should definitely be on your watch list. There’s a reason the movie became such a big hit, so don’t skip it and miss out on the thriller that everyone’s been talking about.
