Purple Hearts

Release Year: 2022

Directed By: Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum

Starring: Sofia Carson, Nicholas Galitzine, Chosen Jacobs, John Harlan Kim, Kat Cunning, Linden Ashby

By far, one of the biggest surprise Netflix movies of 2022 so far was Purple Hearts, the romantic drama starring Feel the Beat star Sofia Carson. In its first week, the film replaced The Gray Man at the peak of the Top 10 movies chart with over 48 million hours viewed, but in the second week, that figure skyrocketed to over 102 million hours viewed.

The numbers don’t lie: Purple Hearts is a hit. Based on the book of the same name by Tess Wakefield, the movie centers on an aspiring singer-songwriter and a Marine who fall in love against all of the odds in their way (including their own beliefs).

If you’ve been on the internet at all since its release in the summer of 2022, then you have probably seen there has been quite a bit of controversy surrounding the subject matter in the film. But you might just have been watching for a love story and some songs sung by Sofia Carson.

Considering its impressive viewership figures, it’s likely that most Netflix subscribers have tuned into Purple Hearts already. If you’re looking for a romantic drama to escape into, then this is definitely worth watching. But if you’re not up for this particular love story that serves up some polarizing topics of discussion, maybe skip this one in favor of another movie.

Verdict: SKIP
