Black Mirror season 6 hit Netflix in 2023 and given but given the extensive wait between season 5 and season 6, many thought we would have to wait a long time for season 7. Luckily, that's not the case! The streaming service revealed that Black Mirror season 7 would be back in 2025 with a six-episode season at the recent Next on Netflix event in London.

Let’s be honest, Black Mirror packs significantly less of a punch than it used to, especially now that so many things that have happened in the show have happened in real life—or at least some version of it.

With AI on the rise, our future is looking bleak and dystopian enough as it is. It’s no wonder that creator Charlie Brooker pivoted to less tech-focused scares in season 6. Still, Black Mirror is kind of a staple for Netflix at this point, so I couldn’t imagine the streamer outright canceling the show at this point. I think it’ll only end when Brooker is done. Otherwise, we’ll probably just get a small batch of episodes every few years like we have been.

Black Mirror season 7 to feature a 'USS Callister' sequel

Get ready to jump for joy, Black Mirror fans! On Nov. 21, Netflix announced that the popular anthology series would be coming back with a seventh season in the future. We had an inkling that the show would be renewed, but we were just waiting on that confirmation.

Charlie Brooker, Annabel Jones, and Jessica Rhodes believed to be executive producing again and the seventh season will include six episodes. The Hollywood Reporter says one of them will be the long-awaited sequel to the hit episode "USS Callister," a break out from the show's fourth season.

For a long time, there were plans in the works for a spinoff series of some kind, but now it looks like it will be turned into a new episode instead.

Here's what Netflix teased about the sequel:

"Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning."

The road to Black Mirror season 6 was a complicated one

Black Mirror has had some lengthy waits between seasons and specials before, but never one as long as the four-year wait between season 5 and season 6. The reason for this is due to some shuffling that occurred when Charlie Brooker and his creative partner Annabel Jones left their previous production company and created a new banner under Broke and Bones, Variety reports.

Jones and Brooker previously worked for Hello Tomorrow, owned by Endemol Shine Group. When they left, the rights to their hit show remained with Endemol, despite Netflix investing heavily in Broke and Bones. To complicate matters further, Endemol was later acquired by another company called the Banijay Group.

According to Variety, Banijay owns the Black Mirror IP, meaning the format itself and the complete catalog. However, Netflix was able to make a new deal to license the show from Banijay, which is how we finally got the sixth season. Netflix sure didn’t scrimp on production costs for it either, as the sixth season included feature-length installments with big-name stars like Salma Hayek. That’s a good sign that Netflix is ready to invest in the show’s future and franchise potential.

So, unless something has changed suddenly, we anticipate more Black Mirror in the future on Netflix, or at least some variation of it. At the very least, we can probably expect future collaborations between Brooker and Netflix, even if it isn’t Black Mirror specifically (like they’ve already done with the “Death to 2020” and “Death to 2021” specials).
