Attention, Pogues! We have some excellent news to share with fans of Outer Banks.

After months of waiting, the cast and crew of Outer Banks season 4 officially resumed production on Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, and for the first time, in a this new location.

According to reports from Star News and other local news outlets in and around Wilmington, North Carolina, the cast and crew are filming seasons in Wilmington on Nov. 20 and Nov. 21. It’s the first reported day of filming since Outer Banks season 4 production shut down in July after SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, went on strike. The strike ended in early November, and now, Outer Banks is one of the first and best Netflix shows to return to production.

Originally, Outer Banks was going to be filmed in Wilmington and other North Carolina locations, but production moved to Charleston, South Carolina, following North Carolina’s HB-2 in 2017. Netflix chose not to support the law and moved production one state away.

It’s especially exciting that Outer Banks is getting the opportunity to film in North Carolina given the plot of season 4. At the end of the third season, it’s revealed that the Pogues will be starting a new treasure hunt after finding the Royal Merchant, the Cross of Santo Domingo, and El Dorado. This time, they’re after Blackbeard’s treasure, and Blackbeard, also known as Edward Teach, sailed the region.

Here’s what Madison Bailey told TUDUM after the season 3 finale:

"“It’s cool that they’re tying the treasure hunt back into history rooted in North Carolina. It was a whole segment of our history class in eighth grade that we just were learning about pirates, and Blackbeard was a big deal.”"

Josh Pate, co-creator of Outer Banks, also expanded on the venture to include Blackbeard and how it will impact the story moving forward in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"“Blackbeard is part of Outer Banks lore, and so there’s just a lot of stuff we can work with out of that. It is going to be a part of it, but it’s not going to be a traditional Blackbeard-type tale, although we’re using elements of the mythology going forward.”"

Outer Banks season 4 filming started in June, one month before the actors’ strike. We know they’ll need a few months of filming to finish the season, and there’s likely going to be a holiday break for Christmas and the New Year. That’s what usually happens with these shows. We’re still waiting for an updated production timeline for season 4, but if production can film for a month or so, take a break, and then return early in 2024, we could be looking like a Q3 or Q4 release for Outer Banks.

That’s a positive right now, for sure. For a while, it looked like Outer Banks season 4 might not return until 2025 with the lengthy delay of the actors’ strike. So, let’s just say we’re stoked — one might even say Chase Stoked — that season 4 is back filming again. There’s no show I’m more excited to watch in 2024 than Outer Banks!

We’ll share more news about Outer Banks season 4 production as we find out. Now that production is up and running, the updates should be rolling in soon. Outer Banks season 4 is shaping up to be one of the best seasons yet.

Woogity, woogity.
