If you’re ready for more Sydney Sweeney, the Emmy-nominated star will be coming to the big screen in not one but two highly anticipated movies. First up, she co-stars alongside Glen Powell in the romantic comedy Anyone But You in December 2023, and then in February 2024, she joins Dakota Johnson in the Marvel superhero movie Madame Web.
Because both Anyone But You and Madame Web are produced and distributed by Sony, they will call Netflix their streaming home sometime after their theatrical runs in 2024. In 2021, Netflix struck a deal with Sony for the streaming rights to their theatrical titles released from 2022 to 2026. Thankfully, both Sydney Sweeney movies make the cut.
Sweeney rose to prominence in the HBO teen drama series Euphoria, which features Zendaya in the headlining role. For her role as Cassie Howard in the second season, Sweeney landed an Emmy Award nomination. The same year, Sweeney was also nominated for her role in the first season of HBO’s hit anthology comedy-drama series The White Lotus.
The talented young star has also appeared in movies such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Nocturne, The Voyeurs, Night Teeth, and Reality, along with the television series Everything Sucks, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Sharp Objects. It’s about time for Sweeney to make the jump to two of her most high-profile movies yet, and the Netflix audience will (eventually) get to watch them both. Here’s everything to know about both movies!
Anyone But You will be on Netflix after theaters
When Sweeney and Powell started filming their romantic comedy in the spring of 2023, there was a lot of chatter on social media about their chemistry. Finally, we will all get the chance to see what all the chemistry chatter was about when Anyone But You hits theaters ahead of Christmas.
In the movie, Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) feel sparks fly on their first date but those initial sparks soon turn sour. Even though they seemingly hate each other, Bea and Ben find themselves opting to pretend to be an item while attending a wedding in Australia. Who wants to bet those sparks will be reignited in the midst of their romantic ruse?
Sony movies typically arrive on Netflix above five to six months after their theatrical release, which could potentially bring Anyone But You to Netflix in around May or June 2024. Of course, that’s simply a prediction and the movie could drop sooner or later than that target date.
- Release Date: December 22, 2023
- Director: Will Gluck
- Cast: Sydney Sweeney, Glen Powell, Alexandra Shipp, GaTa, Hadley Robinson, Michelle Hurd, Dermot Mulroney, Darren Barnet, Rachel Griffiths
Madame Web will be on Netflix after theaters
Even though Marvel movies have been generating headlines from concerned fans about their performance, we have a feeling that the viral success of the Madame Web trailer could be just the thing to help turn this all around. Everyone loves that Dakota Johnson line reading!
In what looks to be quite the campy romp in a similar vein to Venom, Johnson stars in Madame Web as Cassie Webb, a New York City paramedic with the ability to see into the “spider world.” As Sony describes the movie, it’s the origin story of the titular character, a clairvoyant heroine looking into the secrets of her past while also putting together a team of three powerful young women.
We previously mentioned that Sony movies typically arrive on Netflix about five to six months after they release in theaters. Since Madame Web premieres on Valentine’s Day, our prediction for the film’s Netflix release is around July or August 2024. Like with all Sony movies, including Morbius and Uncharted, the film’s Netflix release could arrive sooner or later than that prediction.
- Release Date: February 14, 2024
- Director: S. J. Clarkson
- Cast: Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott
Don’t miss Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You in theaters Dec. 22 and in Madame Web in theaters Feb. 14, 2024, and keep an eye out for both on Netflix sometime in 2024!
