Author Leigh Bardugo confirmed Shadow and Bone season 3 and the Six of Crows spinoff officially are not moving forward at Netflix.
Bardugo, who wrote the Shadow and Bone book series along with Six of Crows, shared a statement on Instagram immediately following a report from Deadline that Shadow and Bone was one of five Netflix shows canceled recently.
Bardugo shared the message to fans with the caption, “love you.” Ben Barnes, who starred as the Darkling in the series, commented a heart emoji on Bardugo’s post.
Shadow and Bone had been one of the most discussed Netflix shows that hadn’t been renewed. Fans were obviously very excited about season 3 and the possibility of the Six of Crows spinoff, but this appears to be the end of the line for the series based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling book series of the same name. The Six of Crows spinoff was not named in the report.
Shadow and Bone season 2 premiered on Netflix on March 16, 2023, to lackluster viewership numbers and reviews. The Deadline report cites low viewership as the reason for the show’s cancellation.
Shadow and Bone was one of the Netflix shows in danger of being canceled in 2023. The second season, which was released almost two full years after the first season, didn’t generate the level of hype as the first season, despite a loyal following on social media.
Coming out of the strikes, the bar to score a renewal seems a lot higher for Netflix shows. In addition to Shadow and Bone, Netflix also canceled Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall.
Obviously, fans of the series were not happy with the cancellation news and being strung along for more than six months after the second season premiered.
This is a developing story. More to come…
