Many Netflix subscribers can’t get enough of the horror genre as they enjoy the thrill, mystery, and suspense or thrive on their ability to figure out the ending. Lucky for this group, the streamer has a wide variety of horror titles to entertain. Below are some great recommendations in horror to enjoy this week.

The streamer has recently announced that a standalone movie in the Fear Street franchise is currently in production, which will be a thrilling addition for fans of this series. If you have yet to view the trilogy of films available on Netflix, I highly recommend you do so.

Another movie catching the attention of horror fans is the newly released Spanish horror Sister Death. A sequel to the 2017 horror Verónica, the new film follows a blind nun and her paranormal experiences in 1940s Spain.

The directorial debut of David F. Sandberg, Lights Out, is a supernatural horror that sees a family terrorized by a force from their past that kills in the dark. A young woman must protect her younger stepbrother from the spirit that has haunted their mother for years. As a child, she remembers her mother talking to an unseen entity, but she believed it was only a figment of her mother’s imagination. She discovers that the spirit is real and is out to kill her and her stepbrother. The film has received positive reviews and is a watch for fans of supernatural horror, and there is a sequel in development.

It Follows

The horror movie It Follows has been praised for being smart and original and sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. The storyline tells about Jay, a young woman who becomes cursed by an entity that is spread between sexual partners, where if not passed on, that person and their partner will be killed. Death can come as a friend or stranger, but it is only seen by the cursed. Jay’s friends believe her to be paranoid until they begin to see the being following her and join her in the fight for her life. The 2014 film has become a cult classic and will have a sequel, They Follow.

Us

Jordan Peele knows the formula for creating a genuinely terrifying psychological thriller. In the 2019 film Us, Peele takes viewers on vacation with the Wilson family, who encounter their creepy and threatening doppelgängers. As a child, Adelaide Wilson is traumatized when she encounters her doppelgänger in a house of mirrors. In the present, she returns to the beachfront home where she grew up and is certain something bad will occur. Her fears become a reality when her family has to fight for their lives. In true Peele form, this movie is thought-provoking and terrifying.

Stranger Things

The premiere of the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is still a ways off; in the meantime, give the first four seasons a rewatch or perhaps for the first time. The series, created by the Duffer Brothers for Netflix, is set in the 1980s, which is excellent for children of the era who enjoy a walk down memory lane. The series is also an outstanding sci-fi horror drama enjoyed by all fans of this genre. The series is set in the small town setting of Hawkins, Indiana, where a portal to the Upside Down, a hostile alternate dimension, has been opened, creating a pathway between worlds. Each episode is full of exciting, heartbreaking, and scary moments, keeping viewers in anticipation of the next episode.
