‘Tis the season for holiday-themed slasher movies! Between Thanksgiving, hype for Terrifier 3 (which has been revealed to be a Christmas horror movie), and It’s a Wonderful Knife, 2023 is shaping up to go out on a high note in the world of the horror genre. Diehard genre fans know that Halloween, while a magical time of year, is just another month and that the scares continue year-round. But I admit it is really fun to see more holiday-centric slasher movies on the horizon.

It’s a Wonderful Knife is a playful riff on the classic Christmas movie It’s a Wonderful Life. Sadly, there aren’t any plans for the film to come to Netflix just yet, but here’s what we know about it.

Yellowjackets actor Jane Widdop stars as Winnie, the hero praised for saving the town of Angel Falls from a psychotic killer one Christmas Eve. But when Winnie makes a wish to never have been born, she sees that day play out again, only this time, no one is there to save the day.

Besides Widdop, the film also stars recognizable faces like Justin Long (Barbarian) and Joel McHale (Community).

  • Director: Tyler MacIntyre
  • Writer: Michael Kennedy
  • Runtime: 89 minutes
  • Cast: Jane Widdop, Jess McLeod, Joel McHale, Katharine Isabelle, William B. Davis, and Justin Long

Currently, the only way to watch the film is to see if it is playing in theaters somewhere near you. Hopefully, we’ll soon get more information on its home release plans.

It’s a Wonderful Knife will eventually stream on Shudder

Update: The movie will begin streaming on Shudder on December 1.

Since It’s a Wonderful Knife is being distributed by RLJE Films and Shudder, we can expect the film to make its streaming debut on the AMC-owned horror streaming service Shudder at some point soon. I haven’t managed to find an official Shudder release date just yet, though I did see Collider reporting December 22, I haven’t found that to be verified anywhere else so for now I’d pencil it in. Shudder hasn’t yet unveiled its December line-up.

For now, the movie is performing decently theatrically as part of its limited release. Bloody Disgusting reports that it opened to $600k during its first weekend in just 923 theaters, which is a respectable number for a low-budget holiday slasher.

There aren’t many options for Christmas horror movies on Netflix right now. The only ones available at the moment are the 2019 remake of Black Christmas, the Polish New Years slasher film All My Friends Are Dead, and the Danish show Elves.
