Gilmore Girls stars Melissa McCarthy and Yanic Truesdale stayed friends long after the show ended
By Mads Lennon
There are many great friendships on Gilmore Girls, from the iconic mother/daughter duo themselves, Rory and Lorelai Gilmore, to the complicated relationship of Rory and Paris and other fan-favorite duos like Sookie/Lorelai and Rory/Lane, friendship, especially female friendship, is at the heart of the show.
However, one underrated trio is that of Michel, Sookie, and Lorelai. Together, they’ve weathered all sorts of challenges at the Independence Inn to finally following their dreams all the way to the Dragonfly Inn. Did you know that actors Melissa McCarthy and Yanic Truesdale, who play Sookie and Michel in Gilmore Girls, are friends in real life?
Even though Sookie and Michel often had a combative relationship, it seems like it’s nothing but love between Truesdale and McCarthy! They even worked together again recently in the Netflix comedy series God’s Favorite Idiot.
Melissa McCarthy and Yanic Truesdale reunited for God’s Favorite Idiot
Released in June 2022, fans got to see a mini Gilmore Girls reunion when Truesdale and McCarthy co-starred in the show about a tech support employee who becomes an unwilling messenger for God. They were paired up frequently on the press tour, which gave fans plenty of chances to see them interacting again outside the world of Stars Hollow, like in the following interview clip.
While chatting with TV Insider in June 2022, Truesdale revealed that part of the appeal of working on God’s Favorite Idiot was getting to have a different on-screen dynamic with his former Gilmore Girls co-star, as Michel was often critical of Sookie.
"“Michel was very standoffish, sarcastic, cold, and detached. The fact that [McCarthy and Falcone) reached out to me to play opposite them, but with this character who is completely the opposite of [Michel], I thought was very, very exciting and fresh for us to do that together. That was a big appeal for me.”"
In the half-hour comedy, Truesdale plays an angel named Chamuel who is tasked with helping Clark (Ben Falcone) with carrying out God’s will. Apart from mentioning his new role, he also confirmed his off-screen friendship with McCarthy during the interview, saying they enjoy hanging out, chatting, and going out to eat together while working on the Netflix show.
"“She’s from the Midwest, I’m French Canadian. We love chatting. We love hanging out. And when you’re friends with people — and I’m sure you are the same — you get to see them for lunch or you go to a dinner and you spend a couple hours together, but I’m never satisfied. It never feels that it’s enough. That’s why I love going to country houses or a beach house with people and friends because you wake up together, you have breakfast, and you can hang out and actually catch up. So for me to be on set with her long days and all day, we were reconnecting at a deeper level.”"
Melissa McCarthy reflects on the time someone criticized Yanic Truesdale’s French accent
In October 2022, McCarthy shared a hilarious memory of someone criticizing Truesdale’s French accent, only to reveal that he had spoken French his entire life.
Strangely, though, the two actors don’t appear to interact very much on Instagram. McCarthy doesn’t follow Truesdale, though he does follow her. But to be fair, that really doesn’t mean anything. A celebrity as famous as McCarthy may not even run her own social media page.
Plus, it doesn’t look like her or Truesdale are very active, they only post about once a month, sometimes less than that.
They once vacationed together in Greece at the same time without realizing it
But their friendship goes back even further than their recent God’s Favorite Idiot collaboration. Another fun moment between the stars happened in 2017 when the two happened to be vacationing in Greece at the same time and snapped a photo together to share with fans!
It’s hard to say if Truesdale and McCarthy are still close, especially since we haven’t heard anything about the rumored second half of God’s Favorite Idiot that was supposed to happen (Netflix initially ordered 16 episodes of the show), and because we haven’t seen them interact with each other on Instagram in a while, though, with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, they wouldn’t be allowed to post about Gilmore Girls right now anyway. I like to believe they’re still close!
Revisit the best moments between Sookie and Michel by watching Gilmore Girls, all episodes are now on Netflix and so is God’s Favorite Idiot.
Beyond that, Truesdale is currently performing in the stage play Docteur at Théâtre Duceppe in Montréal and McCarthy will next appear in the Peacock Christmas movie Genie, premiering on November 22.
