Ready for more mystery? Enola Holmes 3 is reportedly in the works!
By Reed Gaudens
Millie Bobby Brown returned to Netflix as the wise-cracking teen sleuth Enola Holmes in Enola Holmes 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the hit 2020 Netflix movie that came out in 2022. The Stranger Things star once again delivered an excellent performance in the amazing follow-up that’s full of adventure and mystery.
Since the sequel hit Netflix, fans have been wondering about a potential third movie. We can’t just be done with the mysteries, right? Well, we come bearing good news because Collider reports Enola Holmes 3 is in the works! Head of Netflix Film, Scott Stuber, recently spoke with the publication’s journalist Steve Weintraub, where he confirmed Brown will return to the role! Here’s what he said:
"“You know, [Brown is] such a great homegrown star for us. I mean, obviously, Stranger Things is huge for us in that, and watching her grow as an actress. We have a film called Damsel with her in the spring, which I’m really excited about, [from] Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Then, getting that character right. The Holmes IP is weirdly elastic. Obviously, Warner Bros. did an incredible job with Downey and Jude Law, so this idea that we can extend that IP with her is exciting. So, we’re working once again on a screenplay to try to get that. But yes, aspiration. I’d like to do another one.”"
At this time, very little is known about the third movie as it doesn’t seem a script is complete yet. Of course, we’ll be sure to update you when we learn more, but for now, this is such exciting news!
In Enola Holmes 2, the youngest Holmes breaks out on her own as an official detective and takes on her first real case. A young girl asks Enola for help in finding her older sister, who works at the match factory and has gone missing. While untangling the mystery, Enola discovers a much bigger conspiracy that connects to her brother Shelock’s (Henry Cavill) case.
The first film was released on Netflix in September 2020, after its theatrical release by Warner Bros. was sidelined due to the pandemic. Enola still proved a hit, bringing over 76 million households joy with the page-to-screen adaptation in its first month of streaming.
There’s plenty of source material from the book series as well as Sherlock Holmes canon to pull from for future sequels or spinoffs. However, the timing of any follow-ups will definitely have to contend with the busy schedules of Brown and Cavill, plus the ongoing actors’ strike.
While the writers’ strike ended in September so work on the Enola Holmes 3 script can happen now, the cast of the upcoming movie won’t be able to film until the actors’ strike is over. Though we’ve had some updates on the negotiations between SAG and the AMPTMP, they don’t exactly sound promising.
Enola Homes 2 ending explained
The ending of Enola Holmes 2 definitely leaves the story open for a third film, specifically when it comes to Sherlock’s development. In the mid-credits scene, a knock a Sherlock’s door reveals a potential flatmate by the name of Dr. John Watson (Himesh Patel). As we all know, Sherlock and Watson eventually become a team.
Enola Holmes 2 also finds Sherlock’s biggest enemy Moriarty coming into play and breaking free from police in the end. Elsewhere, Enola commits to working on her own, though she’s now open to having friends — and even Sherlock — lend a helping hand from time to time. She and Viscount Tewkesbury are now in a relationship, which another sequel could further explore.
We cannot wait for more developments on Enola Holmes 3.
