Army of the Dead spinoff Lost Vegas might be in trouble (here’s what we know)
By Mads Lennon
Zack Snyder is making himself quite cozy at Netflix with projects like Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon. Not to mention the fact that several of his DC films are coming to Netflix in early December. But one of his projects has yet to materialize on Netflix despite being teased by Netflix Geeked in November 2021 as a 2022 release.
Snyder’s Army of the Dead universe was meant to continue with an animated prequel series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. There is also a planned sequel called Planet of the Dead, but it’s unclear where that production stands. Earlier this year, Snyder told The Nerd Queens that he still sees the Army of the Dead universe as “alive and well.” But that might no longer include Lost Vegas.
The new title is an anime series, meaning it’ll likely be quite different from what we’ve seen of this world so far. As reported by Screen Rant, Dave Bautista will be reprising his role as Scott Ward, with actors Ella Purnell, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick and Ana de la Reguera also returning.
Big-names such as Joe Manganiello, Vanessa Hudgens, Christian Slater, Jena Malone and Riverdale alum Ross Butler have also joined the cast.
Zack Snyder says work on Army of the Dead wasn’t completed
In the most recent issue of Total Film magazine, Snyder said that the animated series, which would have followed the early days of the zombie outbreak, wasn’t completed, but they did get a substantial amount of production completed, including scripts and some of the animation. Even all the voice work has been recorded.
"“We did all the scripts and the animatics, and all the voices are recorded. So you could watch it, even in its crazy animatic form – you can watch the whole run.”"
He doesn’t clarify why the series hasn’t been finished or debuted on Netflix, but the good news is that the show doesn’t appear to be totally dead, though it might not remain at Netflix.
A Snyder fan account shared a screenshot on X (formerly Twitter) revealing someone asking if the show was dead and Snyder responded with a simple, “No.”
Obviously, that’s a very succinct answer and doesn’t provide us with much information, but it’s good news for fans of the Army of the Dead universe. Hopefully, we’ll get more details about the animated prequel at some point soon, even if it does get moved to a different streaming service.
Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas would have confirmed a shared universe with Rebel Moon
One of the most interesting things Snyder revealed while chatting with Total Film is that Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead actually take place in a shared universe. Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas includes a character from Rebel Moon and would have helped introduce fans to Snyder’s next big universe on Netflix had it been released when it was supposed to be in 2022.
"“At one point in the show, they go through a portal into another dimension, and there are characters in that other dimension that they come across,” Snyder explains, “In Rebel Moon, they’re in this bar, and one of the aliens is one of the characters from the animatic. So it’s definitely a shared universe.”"
So it sounds like characters crossed over from both sides, when Lost Vegas characters traveling to the Rebel Moon world and vice versa. Rebel Moon Part 1 premieres on December 22, 2023. You can stream Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves on Netflix right now.
