Six Feet Under cast ages: How old was the cast then (and now)?

If you have been wanting to watch HBO’s Six Feet Under, which has been long heralded as one of the best television shows of all time, but you don’t have Max, you’re in luck. The Emmy-winning series will call Netflix its second home when all five seasons drop at the top of November.
When you start rewatching the show, you will likely be wondering how old the cast members were when the show premiered in 2001, how old they were when it ended in 2005, and how old they are now in 2023, along with what they have been up to since the show wrapped.
We’re sharing the Six Feet Under cast ages then and now and catching up the fans on what the talented ensemble has been working on these days. For everything to know about the main cast members, scroll below, beginning with the show’s co-lead actor Peter Krause.
Peter Krause as Nate Fisher
Peter Krause was born on Aug. 12, 1965, making the Emmy-nominated actor 58 years old as of November 2023. When he started playing Nate Fisher in Six Feet Under when the series premiered on June 3, 2001, he was 35 years old. When the series ended in August 2005, he had just turned 40.
Krause landed three Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work on Six Feet Under, and he won two Screen Actors Guild Awards along with the cast for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Following the conclusion of the HBO series, Krause starred in the Syfy Channel miniseries The Lost Room, the short-lived ABC primetime soap Dirty Sexy Money, and the cult favorite NBC family drama Parenthood. He also co-headlined the ABC series The Catch before landing his current role on the Fox/ABC procedural drama 9-1-1.
Between 2010 and 2021, Krause dated his Parenthood co-star Lauren Graham. Prior to playing Braverman siblings, they first met as costars on the NBC sitcom Caroline in the City in 1995. In 2022, news broke that the couple had broken up after 11 years together. While the couple didn’t have children together, Krause has a son born in 2001 from a previous relationship.
Michael C. Hall as David Fisher
Michael C. Hall was born on Feb. 1, 1971, which makes the Golden Globe-winning actor 52 years old as of November 2023. When he first started portraying David Fisher in June 2001, he was 30 years old, and when the series end five years later, he was 35 years old (the same age Krause was when the series premiered).
Between his work in Six Feet Under and Dexter, Hall has been nominated for seven Emmy Awards. For Dexter, he won both a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2010. After Six Feet Under ended in 2005, Hall went right into Dexter in 2006, and the series lasted for eight seasons through 2013, later returning for the limited sequel series Dexter: New Blood in 2021. He’s also appeared in titles such as The Crown, Safe, and The Defeated. Hall also boasts an extensive theatre résumé with high-profile roles in The Realistic Joneses, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Lazarus, and more.
Before his current marriage to Morgan MacGregor in 2016, Hall has been married twice before to Amy Spanger from 2002 to 2007 and to Dexter co-star Jennifer Carpenter from 2008 to 2011. In January 2010, Hall announced that he had been diagnosed with a form of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and had been receiving treatment. By April of the same year, his cancer entered full remission and he returned to work on Dexter. In 2023, his band Princess Goes released the album Come of Age.
Frances Conroy as Ruth Fisher
Frances Conroy was born on March 15, 1953, making the celebrated actress 70 years old as of November 2023. When Six Feet Under first premiered in June 2001, the actress was 48 years old, and when the series ended after five seasons in August 2005, she was 52 years old. There are only 12 years between Conroy and Krause even though they play mother and son.
For her work as Ruth Fisher in the HBO series, Conroy landed four Emmy Award nominations but took home one Golden Globe Award and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Conroy has been in a number of popular films, including Joker, The Power of the Dog, Nimona, The Wicker Man, The Aviator, Catwoman, and more. However, she’s probably best known for her Emmy-nominated work on the small screen in the American Horror Story seasons Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, Roanoke, Cult, Apocalypse, and Double Feature. She has also appeared in the shows How I Met Your Mother, Royal Pains, Casual, The Mist, Arrested Development, and Dead to Me. Like Hall, Conroy has also done extensive work in theatre.
After divorcing her first husband Jonathan Furst in the 1980s, Conroy married actor Jan Munroe back in 1992 and the couple has been together ever since.
Lauren Ambrose as Claire Fisher
Lauren Ambrose was born on Feb. 20, 1978, which makes the Claire Fisher actress 45 years old as of November 2023. When the series premiered in June 2001, she was 23 years old, and when the series ended in August 2005, she was 27 years old. Like her role as the youngest Fisher sibling, she’s also the youngest of the main cast members.
For her work in the HBO series, Ambrose landed two Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She’s starred in movies such as Can’t Hardly Wait, Where the Wild Things Are, The Other Woman, Sleepwalk with Me, Wanderlust, and About Sunny. She’s likely best known for her work in television in titles like Torchwood: Miracle Day, Servant, and Yellowjackets. Ambrose has also appeared in multiple stage performances and earned a Tony Award nomination for the 2018 revival of My Fair Lady, in which she played Eliza Doolittle.
In September 2001, Ambrose married writer Sam Handel and the pair have two children together: son Orson Handel (born in 2007) and daughter C. Wild Handel (born in 2012). Ambrose’s daughter appears in an episode of her series Servant.
Freddy Rodriguez as Federico Diaz
Freddy Rodriguez was born on Jan. 17, 1975, which makes the Federico Diaz actor 48 years old as of November 2023. When Six Feet Under premiered in June 2001, Rodriguez was 26 years old, and when the show ended in August 2005, he was 30.
Following his role as the Fisher’s business partner in the HBO series, Rodriguez went on to star in Ugly Betty for 12 episodes as well as appear in episodes of other series, such as ER, Perception, and CHAOS. Rodriguez was featured in the main cast of the NBC medical drama series The Night Shift as Dr. Michael Ragosa for the first two seasons and starred in the CBS legal drama Bull as Benny Colón for five of its six seasons. He last appeared in the Hulu drama series Wu-Tang: An American Saga.
For his work in Six Feet Under, Freddy Rodriguez landed an Emmy Award nomination in 2002 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The Puerto Rican actor has been married to Maria Elsie Rivera since 1995 and they have two children together.
Mathew St. Patrick as Keith Charles
Mathew St. Patrick was born on March 17, 1969, making the Keith Charles actor 54 years old as of November 2023. When the series first premiered on HBO in June 2001, St. Patrick was 32 years old, and when the series finale aired in August 2005, he was 36 years old.
Prior to his work on the acclaimed HBO series, St. Patrick starred in the soap operas General Hospital as Marcus Taggert in 1997 and All My Children as Adrian Sword from 1998 to 2000. Following Six Feet Under, the Philadelphia native went on to star in the short-lived series Reunion and appear in episodes of shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Private Practice, NCIS: Los Angeles, Saving Grace, Sons of Anarchy, Hawaii Five-0, and more.
Rachel Griffiths as Brenda Chenowith
Rachel Griffiths was born on Dec. 18, 1968, meaning the Brenda Chenowith actress will turn 55 years old in December 2023. When the series premiered in June 2001, Griffiths was 32 years old, and when the series came to an end after five seasons in August 2005, she was 36 years old.
Prior to starring in Six Feet Under, the Australian actress had been nominated for an Academy Award in 1999 for Best Supporting Actress in Hilary and Jackie. For her work in the HBO series, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2001, earning one more nomination for the series in 2003 and two more for her role in Brothers & Sisters in 2008 and 2009. Griffiths also landed two Emmy Award nominations for the HBO series in 2002 and 2003, as well as two more for Brothers & Sisters in 2007 and 2008.
Apart from Six Feet Under, she’s best known for starring in titles like the aforementioned ABC family drama Brothers & Sisters, Muriel’s Wedding, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Blow, Step Up, Hacksaw Ridge, When We Rise, and more. The Oscar nominee has also worked in the theatre, making her Broadway debut in Other Desert Cities in 2011. She will next appear in the romantic comedy Anyone But You and the series Madam. She has been married to Australian artist Andrew Taylor since 2002 and they share three children: son Banjo (born 2003), daughter Adelaide (born 2005), and daughter Clementine (born 2009).
Jeremy Sisto as Billy Chenowith
Jeremy Sisto was born on Oct. 7, 1974, meaning the Billy Chenowith actor turned 49 years old in October 2023. When the series premiered in 2001, he was 26 years old, and when it come to an end in 2005, he was 30 years old. Sisto had a main role in the first season of Six Feet Under, but he recurred in the next four seasons. In total, he appeared in 31 of the show’s 63 episodes.
Prior to appearing in the HBO series, Sisto appeared in the cult classic teen movie Clueless in 1995. He also had roles in the movies Thirteen and Waitress. After Six Feet Under, Sisto had series regular roles in Kidnapped, Law & Order, Suburgatory, Wicked City, and Ice. He currently in the CBS procedural drama series FBI as Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine. Sisto has also appeared in the stage shows Take Me Out, Festen, and Spirit Control and co-wrote the 2014 film Break Point.
In August 1993, Sisto got married at 18 years old in Las Vegas to actress Marisa Ryan, thought they separated after two days and divorced in 2002. In 2009, Sisto welcomed his first child with Addie Lane, daughter Charlie-Ballerina. The couple married later that year and welcomed son Sebastian in 2012.
James Cromwell as George Sibley
James Cromwell was born on Jan. 27, 1940, making the George Sibley actor 83 years old as of November 2023. When Cromwell joined the Six Feet Under cast in 2003, he was 63 years old, and when the series ended in 2005, he was 65.
Prior to appearing in the HBO show, Cromwell had been nominated for an Academy Award in 1995 for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the movie Babe. He has been nominated for seven Emmy Awards, winning one in 2013 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for American Horror Story: Asylum. Some of his best known work includes Star Trek: First Contact, L.A. Confidential, The Green Mile, The Artist, Marshall, Big Hero 6, Angels in America, Boardwalk Empire, The Young Pope, and Succession. He was been married three times and has three children.
Justina Machado as Vanessa Diaz
Justina Machado was born on Sept. 6, 1972, which makes the Vanessa Diaz actress 51 years old as of November 2023. When she first started appearing in the HBO series, she was 28 years old, and when the series finale aired in August 2005, she was 32 years old. Machado had a recurring role in the first four seasons before becoming a main cast member in season 5.
Machado also starred in the short-lived series Missing, and after Six Feet Under ended, she appeared in episodes of Ghost Whisperer, Grey’s Anatomy, Cold Case, Ugly Betty, and ER. She had a main role in the short-lived CBS medical drama Three Rivers in 2009 and the first season of Queen of the South in 2016, as well as recurring roles in Private Practice and Jane the Virgin. She landed the leading role in the Netflix/Pop comedy One Day at a Time, which received critical praise. Machado most recently starred in the Amazon Prime series The Horror of Dolores Roach and next stars in the comedy movie The Throwback.
