The series is centered around the titular character, of course, Bass Reeves (Oyelowo). He becomes “the most legendary lawman in the Old West” as he rises from being a slave to the first Black law enforcement officer in Mississippi, per the synopsis. U.S. Marshal Reeves has had a successful career arresting over 3,000 outlaws, but “the weight of the badge” has been heavy on him morally and spiritually, as well as on his “beloved family.”
The story and character are based on the real-life Bass Reeves who lived from 1838 – 1910. The project also serves as an anthology series, in which plans for other shows about “iconic lawmen and outlaws who have impacted history” are in the works, per a press release. I mean, if Sheridan is behind this, then I’m sure it will be a success and definitely lead to future productions.
