Alexander Skarsgard plays a formidable and bloodthirsty U.S. Army sergeant in the 2019 A24 film The Kill Team, from Oscar-nominated writer and director Dan Kraus. The film is based on the true story of the Maywand District murders. So, why mention a 2009 movie in 2023? Netflix just added several A24 films to its catalog and The Kill Team is among them, already breaking into the Top 10 at number 5, bumping Bill Burr’s comedy Old Dads into the sixth spot.

The true story of the Maywand District murders is as disturbing as you might expect. A group of Army soldiers were charged with the murder of at least three Afghan civilians during the War in Afghanistan in 2010. At least 12 soldiers were involved in scandal, five of whom faced murder charges and an additional seven that were charged with trying to help them cover everything up.

In the movie, Skarsgard plays a fictional character named Sergeant Deeks. He receives pushback from a young recruit, Andrew Briggman, played by Paper Towns star Nat Wolff. Briggman is one of the only soldiers on Deeks’ platoon who doesn’t immediately go along with his orders, especially when it comes to killing innocent civilians and trying to frame it as self-defense.

Here’s what you need to know about The Kill Team cast and characters.

Alexander Skarsgard as Staff Sergeant Deeks

As mentioned above, Skarsgard plays the film’s main antagonist, Sergeant Deeks. The Swedish actor has been acting consistently since the 1980s and comes from the famous Skarsgard family that also includes Bill Skarsgard, Stellan Skarsgard, Gustaf Skarsgard, and more. Odds are, if you watch a lot of film and television, you’ve seen someone from the Skarsgard family pop up somewhere.

Alexander Skarsgard really broke out in Hollywood after playing the sexy Viking vampire Eric Northman in the HBO series True Blood across seven seasons. After that, he went on to win an Emmy for his chilling performance in Big Little Lies opposite Nicole Kidman and has since appeared in notable projects like The Northman, The Stand, Succession, Infinity Pool, Godzilla vs. Kong, Long Shot, and more. Next he’ll appear in Michael Shannon’s directorial debut Eric Larue, which premiered at Tribeca earlier this year, and the British biographical drama Lee.

Nat Wolff as Alexander Briggman

Nat Wolff plays the whistleblower Andrew Briggman, a young recruit who becomes traumatized by what his sergeant asks of him and reaches out to his father to contact the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) to investigate Deeks. The 28-year-old actor started out on Nickelodeon alongside his brother Alex Wolff in the show The Naked Brothers Band.

He continued performing music as part of a duo with his brother after the show ended before transitioning into acting more with roles in the John Green movies Paper Towns and The Fault in Our Stars. He also played Light Yagami in the Netflix adaptation of Death Note. Wolff actually worked with Skarsgard before on the Stephen King series The Stand. His most recent projects include Murder at Yellowstone City and starring alongside Christoph Waltz in the Prime Video series The Consultant.
