In early October 2023, Netflix managed to acquire the worldwide rights to the film His Three Daughters for just under $7 million. Almost one year later, the movie will be released in theaters and on Netflix in September 2024. If you’re just as pumped as us to see this upcoming movie, you must keep reading to find out everything there is to know about it.

His Three Daughters is a drama film from Azazel Jacobs, an American film director and screenwriter. Jacobs not only wrote the script but also directed and edited the movie. He also directed the black comedy French Exit, and episodes of the TV shows Mozart in the Jungle and Sorry for Your Loss.

The drama film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2023 and received mostly positive reviews from critics. Then, only a month later, Netflix decided to pay big bucks to pick up the streaming rights to it. On June 20, 2024, the streamer announced that the movie will hit select theaters on Sept. 6 before its streaming debut on Sept. 20.

His Three Daughters centers on a trio of women who come together in a time of need. It’s a sisterhood drama that follows three estranged sisters who are forced to reunite to take care of their dying father.

Here’s the official synopsis via the TIFF official website:

"When their father’s health worsens, three estranged sisters come together to try to plan for the inevitable. The eldest is high-strung Katie (Carrie Coon), who talks a hundred miles a minute and stresses about all the practical details. The middle sister, Rachel (Natasha Lyonne), is ready to check out after spending a year taking care of the man. And the youngest sibling, Christina (Elizabeth Olsen), seems always on the verge of tears, trying her best to clumsily keep the peace while they’re all stuck in their father’s small apartment."

Emmy-nominated actress Carrie Coon stars as Katie, the oldest of the siblings. Katie is high-strung and a control freak. You might recognize Coon from her previous role as Nora Durst in the drama series The Leftovers. She also played the role of Gloria Burgle in the anthology series Fargo.

Golden Globe-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne portrays the role of Rachel, the second oldest sibling. Lyonne is best known for her role as Nicky Nichols in Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. She also created, executive produced, and starred in the Netflix comedy-drama series Russian Doll.

Emmy-nominated actress Elizabeth Olsen plays the role of Christina, the youngest of the sisters. Christina is considered the “perfect” sibling and basically acts as the mediator.

You might recognize Olsen from her role as Wanda Maximoff in Marvel movies such as Captain America: The Winter SoldierAvengers: Age of UltronCaptain America: Civil WarAvengers: Infinity WarAvengers: Endgame and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
