Nearly a decade ago, fans were introduced to the spooky (yet somehow lovable) animatronics roaming Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria in the first Five Nights at Freddy’s video game, which came out in August 2014. Since then, the horror franchise has spawned over ten games, cosplay, novels, copious amounts of fan art, merchandise, and more. Even if you haven’t gotten involved in the online community, odds are, if you spend any significant time on social media, you’ve brushed against the fandom, which is vast and full of fans of all ages.

Funnily enough, creator Scott Cawthon’s idea for the game spawned from poor reception to a family-friendly game he’d made before that. In 2013, Cawthon released a game called Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. that featured several beaver characters. Many critics thought the beavers looked too creepy and almost like animatronics. That got Cawthon thinking and he decided to go all-in on the premise.

Here we are, almost a decade later, and Five Nights at Freddy’s is finally coming to the big screen! Fans have been waiting for this movie for years now, as the film rights were initially purchased by Warner Bros. way back in 2015. It’s more or less been stuck in development hell since then. Even after Blumhouse took over in 2017, it would be several more years, a few directors, and multiple versions of the script before the film really entered active development.

But it seems like the movie has been worth the wait, if the promotion and trailers are anything to go by, in particular, the incredible designs of the film’s focal point: the animatronics. Designed with care by the iconic Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the main animatronics—Bonnie, Freddy, Chica, and Foxy—look absolutely incredible.

Unfortunately for fans who had hoped the movie would be on Netflix, that’s not the case. Since it is a Blumhouse movie, NBCUniversal owns Five Nights at Freddy’s. The film was released in theaters on October 25, 2023 in the United Kingdom and in the United States on October 27, 2023.

There aren’t many similar movies to Five Nights at Freddy’s available on Netflix. You’re better off tracking down the Nicolas Cage-led Willy’s Wonderland, the Hulu short film “The Hug,” or The Banana Splits Movie for something with a similar vibe.
