10. The timeline shouldn’t be so short

Just in case you weren’t aware, the first five seasons of Virgin River takes place over the course of less than a year. To put that in perspective, that means Mel arrived in town, fell in love with Jack, became pregnant, had a minor paternity crisis, and suffered a devastating miscarriage all within the span of a handful of months. Oh, and Charmaine’s pregnancy has also lasted over four years in real time. Has there ever been a television series that moved this slowly?

Thankfully, the new showrunner that took over the reins in season 5 has started to remedy the situation by jumping ahead in time to the holidays at the end of the season. It remains to be seen how the series will play with time in season 6. But moving faster in the plot would solve a lot of narrative issues with timing and pacing. Rather than waiting for things like births and weddings to happen, they could happen faster than two seasons later.

9. Hope comes on a little strong

In the first couple seasons of the show, Hope buzzes around town, spreading gossip like a tightly wound social butterfly. She means well (or at least she believes she does), but she can really get on our nerves. Remember when she was all bent out of shape when she had information about Jack’s personal life? She was oddly stressed about it when the situation had literally nothing to do with her. Even though she has mellowed out quite a bit since her near-fatal accident and the death of her friend Lilly, she can still be quite the firecracker.

8. Tim Matheson is playing his same character from Hart of Dixie

Have you ever noticed that Doc from Virgin River has a striking resemblance to Dr. Brick Breeland from Hart of Dixie? Well, its because Tim Matheson plays them both… and they are essentially the same character. A small-town doctor who’s set in his ways and fiercely independent. When a new woman arrives in town to work at his practice, he profusely rejects her until she eventually wears him down and he comes to respect her. What happened between Zoe and Brick has happened between Mel and Doc. It’s not a bad thing, just an observation!
